I'm your host, John new Name. Hey, everybody, welcome to episode two oh one of Hobby Quick Hits. And today we've got the great two question mark Gretzky versus a Vechkin and so congrats to Alex Ovechkin on breaking the NHL goal scoring all time record held by formerly Wayne Gretzky. And you know, I'm a big Rangers fan, but I do watch hockey.
I follow hockey. I wouldn't say I'm a fan in the Saint Vein as baseball or football, but probably you know in that zone, if you will, I know enough to talk about it. And you know, since this record's been broke, which is a great record that many people didn't think would be broke, I'm hearing a lot of people talking about how he's better than gret Ski and how he's the great one. Not not most people, but I've heard some people.
I've heard a few people say that. So I really wanted tind Of to crunch the numbers and see, you know, how he does match up with gret Ski and so that's what this episode is going to be about. Okay, Now a quick word from our great sponsor, followed by the new product release schedule. Then we'll go around the hobby verse to tell you all the latest hobby happenings and news.

And that's it for the next two weeks.
As I always say, choose your weapon, Happy ripping. Let's go round the hobby verse and catch up on this week's hobby news. And find out all right, pretty good news week or two weeks, I should say, since we do this show every other week, now, let's start with a big car. We're gonna talk about a big cards right off the front here, the Jordan Kobe two thousand and seven upper Deck Exquisite Gold signed Logo Man obviously one of one will be coming to Heritage Auction Summer Platinum Auction, which will end in August.
This is probably set to be the highest sold basketball card in history, and there are some that believe it has an outside, you know, a dark horse chance on breaking the all time record. I don't know about that, folks, but definitely could see the basketball record falling. That will end, like I said, in August. And if you really you want to see this card in person, Heritage will have it in Chicago at the National in July in the front part of August.
Another big card on the women's side. It's the new high selling card ever for a woman athlete. The twenty twenty four Prism Caitlin Clark signed gold vinyl, one of one which was graded PSA double ten ten on the card, ten on the auto sold the other day at Golden's for three hundred and sixty six thousand dollars. Again the new record for women on a card, So congrats to the buyers, seller and Caitlin Clark herself.
A couple new deals, a lot of new deals being signed. Chadur Sanders and his teammate at Colorado, both soon to be NFL players. Travis Hunter signed exclusives with Panini for autograph exclusives. So if you want a Shador Sanders or Travis Hunter auto, it's gonna have that Panini logo on it.
This is that you know, war between probably Panini and Fanatics slash Tops to try to get these guys signed to exclusive deals. So kudos to Panini forgetting these two guys in back to back weeks. No Less Upper Deck has extended their deal with Tiger Woods for autographs and memorabilia. That's twenty five years strong now and it will continue.
No terms were disclosed, but they've been partners for twenty five years and that won't be changing anytime soon. It looks like let's go to another product drop Tops. Fanatic slash Tops. You know you don't think they have a hockey license, Well you're right, they don't, but they do.
They have released a hockey product called Emine. It's em a n Ate can get it from their website. It's one item per box, seventy players passed and current. It's on photo stock.
It's in a one touch magnetic everyone is signed and again current and former players. If it's really nice looking product. If you see the picks, listen, it looks like a card even though it's a thinner stock. There are no player bios or stats on the back, but you know, again check it out.
They do have a card like appearance. They also are numbered much like cards are. So golds are numbered to fifty, oranges to twenty five, blues to ten, reds to five, and an iridescence are one of one. Again their photo stock, but they are in one touches and they look you know, if you didn't know the stock, you would say there are cards, so you know, kind of little loopoh and how you can get around things and get NHL they do have They are licensed by the NHL and the Players Association because they're not air quotes cards.
If you will check it out. I think it's one hundred and twenty four ninety nine per pack per per box. You know, it's one one one pack, one box, one one item per box. Some big names in there.
They also have multiple signature cards and I think there's a card with like Connor Berdard McDavid and another guy I think Austin Matgris with all three of them signing it. So you know, good luck there. It's a sharp looking product whatever, no matter what, you know, whatever you want to think about, kind of fanatics going around and getting this done. One last news thing to talk about.
eBay has a deal with with PSA. If you buy something on eBay and want to send it direct from eBay to PSA, can do that. Couple stipulations here. Card has to be you know, over that two hundred and fifty dollars threshold, go through the eBay authentication process, and then on the PSA for grading.
There's no guarantee of the grade. Costs will be at minimum I believe forty nine ninety nine, and you know, the higher the value the card, that that price goes up and it will be at the value level. So won't be a real quick turnaround, if that's what you're you're hoping for. So you know, those two companies obviously have a relationship, you know, with with the eBay vault being owned by collectors, and so this will be another extension of that.
It's a good deal if you buy something up significance that's raw and you want it to be encapsulated again, there is no you know, there is no guarantee on the grade, so you're gonna have to base whether you want that card graded on the scans, on the auction site itself. And no. All right, folks, so you probably heard my intro and you know where I stand on this. Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time.
And that's not to say Alex Ovechkin is not one of the all time grades, but Gretzky is the great one. And we're gonna write down some numbers here, and these are always tough, right, you know, you get your Jordan versus Lebron debate. And now there are some people. The majority will still always say Wayne Gretzky is the greatest NHL player of all time, but there are some people.
I've heard a couple of talk shows and radio shows on the sports side obviously that are saying, you know, we have to consider a Vechkin now because of him breaking that record. And it's not as simple as that. But one thing it's always hard is to compare guys who played sort of in different errors, right, and you know, Jordan and Lebron their past didn't cross you know, Gretzky. The NHL was a little bit different than the NHL that Avechkin played in.
You know, comparing baseball players of yesteryear to current you know, it's it's not always fair, but yet we still do it right. It doesn't stop us. We liked to debate people, sports fans, collectors. Debating is one of their favorite things to do.
So let's do a little tale of the tape, if you will. So the goal record now belongs to a Vechkin with when he scored his eight hundred and ninety fifth goal against the Islanders last week, beating Gretzki, won ahead of Gretzki at that point, who has eight hundred ninety four lifetime goals. The interesting thing is they both did it in the fourth their same game, the one four hundred eighty seventh game to each played. A Vechkin has one more goal in the same amount of games.
And that's where a lot of these people who are arguing that makes a Vechkin better He scored one more goal in the same amount of games Dad Gretzky did. It's not as simple as that. So let's take that same fourteen eighty seven games that we're talking about and look at some other numbers. Okay, In that same stretch, Gretzky had nineteen hundred and sixty three assists to only seven to twenty four for Avechkin.
Gretzky had two thousand, eight hundred and fifty seven points to one six hundred and nineteen for Avechkin. They both averaged over a point the game. But if you if you're good at math, Gretzky almost averaged two points for each game in the same amount of time over their careers. This is a career totals now, not just that same fourteen eighty seven number.
Gretzky has seventy three shorthanded goals to five by Avechkin. Avechkin, noow does have one hundred and thirty six game winning goals to ninety one of Gretzki. Here's an important stat and this stat is lifetime Okay. Alvachkin has six eight hundred and fifty four shots on goal and Gretzky has five three hundred and fifty eight shots on goal.
So Lavechkin has one thousand, five hundred more shots on goal and has the same amount of goal. So obviously Gretzky shooting percentage is much higher and much more successful than Avechkin. We can go with Stanley Cupps. You know, Gretzky has four of them, does have one Heart Trophies, which is the NHL equivalent of the MVP Award.
Gretzky has nine in his cabinet. Avechkin has three in his art Rose art Ross Awards, which is for most points in each season the points leader. Gretzy has ten of those and Ovechkin only has one of those. So in twenty seasons played, Avechkin's only led the league in scoring one time.
In twenty seasons played for Gretzky, He's led the season in points ten times. One every two years half as half his time in the league, he's won the scoring title. Gretzky has fifteen All Star appearances and Avechkin has twelve. Now, again, there are different types of players, right Avechkin is to me kind of a more physical scorer, where Gretzky was kind of a more of a finesse guy, kind of weave through traffic and put the puck in the net.
He had enforced their teammates to kind of protect them. And I mean every team has enforcers. I don't want to make it sound like, you know, it's just one one guy. You know, Gretzky is not the only one, you know, I know we mentioned, you know, Gretzky having four Cups to a Vechkin's one.
You know, if you want to make the argument that Gretzky's had better teammates and better team is that he's played on. I won't argue that. I believe that to be true. You know Washington Capitals, which you know Avechkin's played on his whole career.
You know, they've won a Cup, but they haven't had all time great teams. I think Gretzky Gretzky has, but I don't you know, when you when you match these numbers up in the same amount of games, like it's it's not really even that close. And that's not even the takeaway from Alex Alex Ovechkin. He is a great player.
I am not arguing that, but he's just not the greatest player. Like I'm hearing some put him on that pedestal now because of this record, which is a great record that you know, we said that kind of about Gretzky, right, we don't think that record will ever be broken. And maybe this one won't either, although you know, Gretzky's was the you know, if you ask me, who's who's the best candidate to maybe break this record someday, the name might surprise you, and it's not Connor McDavid. It's Austin Matthews, who's actually right now would be on pace, but he's younger, He's gonna get older and that pace might slow down.
But on paper he's kind of the next threat to the goal all time goal scoring record, which your Vatchkin is is the leader, but it's you know, hockey is more than just goal scorers. You know, Gretzky was a better passer hence you know, twelve hundred more assist and in lesser time played and you know, so both great players. But you know, Gretzky is not losing his great one title to Alex and wouldn't mind having you know, well, Gretzky did play for the Rangers, but as a Ranger fan, you know would have either of these players on that. I mean, they're just all time greats.
You know, where Alex ranks, you know, probably top five, definitely top top ten. But you know, no one argues, or very few people argue that Wayne Gretzky is not the greatest of all times. Probably of all the four major sports, right, that's the least argumentative. Right.
Baseball we we argue who's the greatest baseball player of all time? Football, we have debates, you know, Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, you know basketball, Lebron, Michael Jordan, uh, you know, Kareem Wilt, others, Bill Russell. In hockey. To me, there's there's actually no you know, cases closed. And you know, so that's what brought out this episode.
I just heard a lot of a Vechkin, a Vechkin and a Vegan, and I get that that's the record is fresh, it just got broke, and it's a great accomplishment by a great all time NHL player, but not the greatest. And so I kind of wanted to do, uh, tailor the tape, and we don't do uh, I don't do a ton of hockey content. Maybe try to do a little bit more. But you know, I'm definitely a hockey fan, and I won't say I'm hockey historian per se, but a hockey fan for sure.
And so saw an opportunity to talk a little NHL some hockey and had fun with it. So hopefully enjoyed the episode, and we'll be back in a couple of weeks with another hobby quickts and next week we'll be our Breaking Cardboard, which shameless plug Breaking Cardboards our every other Friday live show nine pm Eastern Time with a guest, and then every episode we chop up some hobbies, kind of laid back kind of convo and we open some packs and that's can follow our YouTube channel, Sports Cardination Network, and again every other Friday, nine pm.
