hobby quick
hits delivering that breaking hobby
news directly to your
[Music]
ear you want to know those hot drops
from the car shop we've got you covered
with your
host John
[Music]
Newman Hello everybody welcome to
another episode of hobby quick hits
today will probably be the shortest
ever episode of hobby quick hits hence
uh the name it's going to live up to the
uh quick hits name we bring back uh uh
Legends of the hobby series we haven't
done that in a while where we cover an
individual no longer with us a hobby
icon or someone very crucial to the
Hobby we've really covered a lot of
ground even though we don't do them
every so often uh We've covered uh some
ground with this uh
today's person is persons it's the
shoren family famous for launching tops
way back when and so we'll cover the
family rather than uh one person
although Arthur was definitely one of
the big architects of it but it's going
to it's more of the shore and family in
the beginnings of tops it is a quick
episode uh I didn't want to embellish I
just wanted to kind of talk about them
how they
started and uh you know why we have tops
today even though it's obviously in a
different form uh and and whatnot so
again shortest episode probably uh I've
ever done but important at least in my
opinion nonetheless so we're going to
hear from our great sponsor and then
right after that we'll get to our our
episode hi this is Pat Hughes Cubs
Announcer coming to you from the sports
card shop in beautiful New Buffalo
Michigan the goer family has built an
incredible place here for collectors to
buy sell and trade cards and memorabilia
be sure to stop by and let them show you
around the sportscard shop.com
connecting Sports athletes The Hobby and
collectors around the world hi this is
Alan pinket and I'm here to tell you the
goer family has done it again they've
just opened up the sport card shop in
downtown valarezo Indiana and it is
awesome if you're a collector you need
to check this place out tell them Allen
sent you and get a free gift on your
first visit
and now our Feature
Presentation it's time for another
Legends of the Hobby and today we're
going to learn about the shoran
family all right we're going to learn
about the Assurance of Topps Fame but it
has to start in
1908 when Morris chigirinsky shurin took
control of a company uh named American
leaf tobacco and much like the name
implies they sold tobacco uh at the time
but Sons his sons Abram Ira Phillip and
Joseph relaunched the company in
1938 as tops with two PS as we know the
name but the the reason they picked tops
is because they wanted to be the tops in
the industry hence the name they added a
p uh to kind of
differentiate uh themselves there and
they decided to produce chewing gum due
to Tobacco sources drying up especially
from the Turkish
tobacco fields and uh they initially
wanted to go into the the produce uh
business fruit uh before gum but that uh
but that was rejected and gum was
selected they started with bazooka and
the small Comics that we remember in
those bazooka gums the first day they
they started uh
bazooka uh
was uh the first day Cy Berger started
there as actually a temp uh employee uh
in
1950 they wanted to
incorporate uh cards and the first cards
they added were uh Hopalong Cassidy from
the TV show Hopalong Cassidy they were
Incorporated in
1947 they originally operated at the
bush ter terminal in Brooklyn in 1965
production moved to a plant in dur Dua
Pennsylvania and operated uh in full
capacity to
1997 uh their headquarters uh remained
in Brooklyn till 1994 which then they
moved to Manhattan uh some stock market
stuff they went public in
1972 then privatized again in 19
84 uh after a leveraged uh buyout but
then they went public again in
1987 all this time still being managed
by the shuran uh family uh on October 12
2007 they were acquired by Michael
Eisner we know recent news and and and
what happened there uh so we won't
rehash that their first four into sports
cards was with the
1951 blue and red backs they they were
made like a game with uh uh players on
them 52 cards uh of each color uh if
you're a historian you know about the
tops Bowman Wars and uh tops eventually
won which led to the
acquisition of Bowman in 1956
by tops but uh they really didn't do
nothing with Bowman until uh years later
and you know the shorin can thank a
gentleman by S berer uh who we've done a
legend of the hobby uh on for probably
winning that player war with Bowman
allowing tops uh to survive uh and
Bowman to be acquired in 19
56 so you know there you go I bet you a
lot of you probably didn't know that U
you know tops went back to 1908 even
though it wasn't called tops at the time
but rather American leaf tobacco all
