SPEAKER 5: That's it. Guys have a good day.

SPEAKER 6: Let's go around the hobby verse and catch up on this week's hobby news.

SPEAKER 2: All right. Not a ton of news stories but some big ones. Let's start with the biggest and most obvious one. We know the fanatics Panini battle if you will, litigation and then the bombshell, the NFL P A, the NFL Players Association announces they are pulling the license from Panini which was not to expire till 2026. They say we're pulling it now and not only are they pulling it, but we're going to give it to fanatics early.

SPEAKER 2: Obviously I have no say in the matter. But it's big news, but the thing that bothered me the most was them just saying, hey, we're gonna hand it to fanatics now, like if, if you're mad at Panini and you don't want them to do your cards anymore. All right. But you can't just give it to the next person that early without, you know, someone else rule that Panini, you know, really did mess up.

SPEAKER 2: So Panini, you know, basically fired back said, you know, our contract runs to 2026. We are going to fulfill our commitment. We didn't do anything wrong and you know, we're going to file for, you know, an injunction just to be legal and above board and that, so that's where we're at.

SPEAKER 2: And Panini continues to you know, list football products or ship out according to some store owners that, I know, so it's business as usual for them.

SPEAKER 2: Many are saying and I don't disagree but many are saying this is, you know, probably a plot on, on both parts to, you know, you know, for Panini they want to raise their, their acquisition price and for fanatics they wanna hasten, you know, speed up the process to acquire Panini to so they can start producing basketball and football cards and not wait till 2026. They don't want to wait till 2026.

SPEAKER 2: And so that's what this is all about. Again, a lot of speculation. I just added some right here and now and, and, and I'll even add more speculation, although I believe this to be true. I don't think the NFL P A woke up one morning and decided to do this.

SPEAKER 2: I think a, a phone call was made or some kind of communique between fanatics whether it's Ruben himself or someone on that team to the NFL P A who they are in good with. Hey, do this. Let's get working together sooner. So it's gonna be interesting to see how the song play plays out.

SPEAKER 2: Brian Gray owner and CEO of Leaf Trading Cards of 13 years released a statement announcing he is stepping away from that position. So that's what the Happy Trails was for. He cited health and family did not announce at the moment a successor and talk, you know, talk about a news story, you know, with lots of speculation around it.

SPEAKER 2: This one as well. Many are saying he is going to take a position with the fanatics group, maybe heading tops. I don't, I'm not saying he's not going to fanatics but I don't know, you know what position, I don't know about running tops, but what do I know? Right. It's all speculation.

SPEAKER 2: Others are saying maybe he's sick and maybe that's why health was listed as the first reason. Obviously, I hope he is healthy and not sick. So, you know, more to come on this to, you know, many are saying leaf has been acquired by fanatics. And it just hasn't been announced yet and they don't want him as, as part of the package again.

SPEAKER 2: You know, it depends who you talk to. You'll get a different opinion or theory. So we'll have to wait and see any kind of further announcements there didn't get to touch much on it and I'm, I'm not gonna talk a ton about it. I probably heard about the Wanda Franco situation.

SPEAKER 2: Allegedly a relationship with a 14 year old, girl, major league baseball is looking in into it. He is right now indefinitely suspended. We can look at the Trevor Bauer situation and he'll probably never pitch in the majors again.

SPEAKER 2: And so many are feeling like Wanda Franco's major league baseball career may be over before barely after it got started and his cards are reflected, you know, reflective of that price. I'm not gonna tell you to buy him, on, on this huge selloff. But, you know, let's see what comes out of this. You know, I try to follow the innocent until proven guilty.

SPEAKER 2: Not good if this is true, obviously. And, you know, we're gonna let, let this kind of chips play out. I'm not telling you to buy them.

SPEAKER 2: But, let's see what happens here and, you know, he's such a young player.

SPEAKER 2: You know, it would be sad if that's how his career kind of ends. But, let's see what evidence shows and, and then what major league baseball decides to do, speaking of players with a little dip in price, or not as much as, as wander. But Otani her, her, his UUC out and will shut down pitching for the rest of the year.

SPEAKER 2: But he's still playing, he's still just batting.

SPEAKER 2: And a lot of people, you know, we've seen a little bit of dip in price. I don't really, I get it but I don't get it. Here's what, here's my take on Otani. He get stopped playing today.

SPEAKER 2: He's gonna win the American League MVP. You know, he's got 44 home runs at the time of this recording, way ahead of, of second place and just putting up incredible numbers in the box, plus his pitching stats before he got hurt were phenomenal.

SPEAKER 2: So, you know, he, he's got MVP in the bag this year. I know it's his, you know, gonna be another surgery, relating to pitcher pitching, but, you know, his pitching season might be over, but he's gonna come back. He's gonna very soon here be the highest paid major league baseball player ever, whether that's to stay with the Angels or he takes his talents somewhere else.

SPEAKER 2: New York Mets, please. But you know, he, he's still, if he just hit, if he never hears a crazy thing that I think people forget if he never pitches again.

SPEAKER 2: And just hits and stays relatively healthy to do that, he's going to be a hall of Famer. He's going to do things, you know, never seen before and he's already, you know, we, I know we compare him to Babe Ruth and, and what I might say might shock some of and some of you will probably nod your head in agreement.

SPEAKER 2: He's already better than Babe Ruth when it comes to two way players. You know, Babe Ruth had one incredible pitching year o he's had three at this point and, and maybe more to come, hopefully, you know, he gets over this injury with, with successful surgery.

SPEAKER 2: So, you know, if you're selling, if you want to sell ocon real cheap, contact me, because I'm a buyer because even even just as a hitter, he's still an incredible player. And, you know, and that, that's the thing about hobbyist, right?

SPEAKER 2: Someone gets injured and people like, like act as if they're never gonna come back from that. But in this case, even if he never pitches again, he's still an incredible hitter and incredible talent and an incredible baseball player. So if you want to dump, let me know now our feature presentation.

SPEAKER 2: All right, let's get into these questions, you know, how these work. Again, you know, feel free to send any questions you may have to any of our social medias, emails, D MP MS, whatever, smoke signals, hire a plane. But you get the idea.

SPEAKER 2: We, we love these questions and, and that, you know, we want to answer as many as we can if anything's, on your mind. So the first question comes from Pat, he says, John, love the show. Is there a guest you haven't had on that you would love to have on?

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, I, I probably would say, yeah, I mean, first off, we've had over 200 guests on Sports Coin Nation. I'm sure that's what it is referring to. We've had guests on the show as well. From seven year old young collectors to CEO S and and everything in between. I pride myself on that to answer your question.

SPEAKER 2: You know, I never really thought about it. I, I guess, you know, there, I've effort Gary V to, to know that I know he's been on other shows. But if I had to pick one answer, I would say, you know, whether I like him or not, has no to me factor but I say Michael Ruben, I love if Michael Roman would come on Sports Car Nation be very tactful.

SPEAKER 2: But yeah, I got some questions I would like answered and the opportunity to ask them. So the answer to your question for me, when only picking one, Michael Ruben. All right. Second question comes from James who asked, heard you talk about some of your favorite teams. But how much sports do you actually watch first off when it comes to football?

SPEAKER 2: And the Steelers, I watch literally every game. The only time I would miss a Steeler game is if I was somewhere that, like, that I had to be at where I couldn't watch the game and even then I would, you know, tape it and then watch it, after, and try not to, even to hear the score if at all possible.

SPEAKER 2: So every steller game, I'm a huge Mets guy, you know, that our seasons really went down the tubes. But before that officially happened I was watching not every Mets game, you know, I play 100 and 62 but, you know, probably 50 to, to 60% of them, when I could, my household is, is all Mets fans.

SPEAKER 2: So somebody here is always watching the game, whether it's Me too or not. But, so a lot of Mets games, a lot of Steer games. I'm a New York Ranger fan and I watch, you know, a good percent, you know, probably same thing, like with the Mets 50 to 60% of the games, that are on. I'll, I'll sit down and watch them. I now have, it's not really recent but, cable in my office here probably about a year and a half ago.

SPEAKER 2: And that's, that's helped me accomplish, you know, higher sports, watching and, you know, obviously the World Cup, I'll watch the US games. I'll watch other teams, obviously World Series Super Bowl, playoffs. SU, I'm in Syracuse so I will watch SU sports, in person and on TV.

SPEAKER 2: And, and that, and, I, I live a mile and a half from the Syracuse Mets AAA Stadium, so I try to catch a few games at least, every year, there as well. So, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm a, you know, I was a sports fan before. I was in the hobby and I think that's why I'm in the hobby and I remain a sports fan to this day.

SPEAKER 2: So, you know, time is of the essence, but I do tend to watch a decent amount of sports. All right, Mike S you talked about on a recent show? Maybe the national being in new locations. What say you John, where do you want to see it? If you have the power? Well, I don't have that power unfortunately. And I'm gonna be a little selfish and biased here with my answer and say, Baltimore, my good friend, Danny Black lives there.

SPEAKER 2: So I'd have a place to stay and, we'd make, you know, part of the national scene in the city and, and things it offers. Right. And I'd have a, a personal tour guide, with Danny, doing that. So, Baltimore and I have heard Baltimore be mentioned again. So maybe that's some, you know, a possibility.

SPEAKER 2: But that would probably be, you know, my pick when, when it comes to a new location that it hasn't been, in a while. So, again, for the reasons I stated, which are kind of personal and biased, but, Baltimore would be my answer. Ok. Next question comes from Jalyn Joly. I hope I'm not butchering that. It's spelled Jalin Jolyn Jalen.

SPEAKER 2: And he asks, what sport do you think is most in trouble? Hobby wise?

SPEAKER 2: That's a good question. You know, we can rank them now, right? But I, I'm gonna take this question. I mean, you know, which one has, is in, in danger of, of kind of losing its perch, you know, when we think about the four major sports, when it comes to the hobby, hockey's gonna be four, right? Some people claim soccer's passing. Iii I don't see that, but I don't know. So, you know, hockey is already for it.

SPEAKER 2: So I, I, I'll say which, you know, kind of what of the other three could lose their spot. I, I think it's basketball. I think we've already started to see sort of that hysteria and hype come out, come off that rose, right. The boom, come off, that rose a little bit. Why is that my answer? Here's why I, I don't, I don't just want to say basketball and I gave you some explanations. Right.

SPEAKER 2: Number one, I think we've seen some of the major stars, you know, take some hits. John Moran got in trouble and suspended. Zion's been, you know, up until this point, very disappointing. He missed a lot of time. Lebron James.

SPEAKER 2: You know, the, the Lakers have not been really successful in the postseason and he's on the backside of his career and we've seen some of the rookie classes the last few years be sort of disappointing. I mean, the big, the most, the biggest one in recent years was that John Marant Zion rookie year and, you know, it looked like Jo was gonna carry that class and then he got in trouble.

SPEAKER 2: So I think some not great rookie classes, some off the court issues got, you know, hype superstars not being on the court, other hype superstars like lebron while they're certain Hall Of Famers, they're, they're sort of not being successful in the postseason.

SPEAKER 2: You know, whether you like it, it doesn't bother me, but some people will point to, you know, a lot of foreigners dominating the sport or in the draft, you know, like I never even heard of this guy who is he where you watch other drafts?

SPEAKER 2: And there's more familiarity again, it doesn't bother me personally, but I guess I could see that when I've heard others talk about it, I guess I could see that as maybe why popularity can come down. But I think, if you're really entrenched in the hobby and finger on the pulse, I think you've noticed sort of basketball. I'm not saying it's not popular and it's not a lot of cards and product being sold.

SPEAKER 2: I just think it's, it's calmed down, tremendously to, it's where it was and I think the potential for it to drop even more is, is out there. So that's my answer. Jalen is, is, is basketball. All right, we'll, we'll quit at four. I have, I have a couple more, but, we'll save those and we'll, hopefully get some more and we'll add to that and, you know, somewhere down the line do the sixth rendition of this show.

SPEAKER 2: But, don't want to make the show too long. So we'll, we'll wrap it up there. I want to thank the four folks that, sent in those questions and again, feel, feel free to keep sending in those questions so we can do, these shows from time to time. I don't want to overdo it.

SPEAKER 2: But it's, it's fun to, to answer some of these questions that what people might be wondering about. So, with that being said, thank you very much. All right.
