Nation what is up everybody Welcome to episode 308 of sports card Nation today is a
continuation of our conversation ation with my local promoter Andrew Crosset
who started the Watertown show a little over a year ago but has expanded his range and his show
offerings he does a great job with his show and that Watertown show that I set
up at each month really wasn't supposed to be that I was
just going to you know try it out and here we are you know it's become a monthly event for
me and it's a great time and have fun with the people I set up with and Andrew does a great job at putting on that show
and it's it's been a surprise to me at how well that show uh is how good that
show is and uh again we're back with Andrew today we're going to dive behind the scenes of how he kind of built this
monster and and things he's doing in in the hobby uh as well so quick 30 second
break and we'll be back with the conclusion of our interview with Andrew Crosset hobby

and one thing I will say about about your shows Andrew you know you do a great job right but the other thing you
do well is keep the the cost down for the vendors and the customers uh coming
in was that something you sort of thought about from Jump Street like hey this is this is how I want to do it uh
because I think it's it'll be successful for everybody that was 100% the reason
why we started we were doing the show circuit we were looking at these weekends of hey we're traveling you know
to these places that aren't around us there's not a central show we're having to pay you know $200 on hotels we're
having gas fees and then on top of that you look at some of the table fees now if you look at a table at National your
average vendor can't even look at it and it's even Trinkle down to other shows where you know you're spending you know
A1 $200 on a table for an event and you can't look at it as a vendor when you're
working on a small margin most of the time you can't look at and say hey I got $600 in table fees cuz I got three
tables that comes right off the top that you have to make an awful lot of profit that day in order to make this an actual
Hobby and I don't want to call it a job because most of us it's not a job we're doing it for fun we're in it because we
love the hobby but it puts you really behind the eightball when you say I got to sell $1,500 today in order to make
the show be good we take Watertown $35 for a vendor and you know you put in
it's close enough to everyone that does it there's not Hotel involved maybe you got $20 a gas $50 makes it a pretty easy
day on the vendor side of things and because of that it helps out the customers because you don't have vendors
trying to maximize every dollar trying to make their money back yeah that's a great Point too that last point you made
there is is besides keeping the cost down for the vendor which just takes a little bit of you know the pressure off
them like you said and also you know that stuff trickles down right so men
vendor hopefully uh don't mark up their stuff to sort of overcompensate for that
so people coming to the show to to pick up some great cards will run into some
great deals and I think that's been the case I think it's probably one of the big reasons that your show is where it
is today in in comparison to uh where it was when you first started it so you
know again like you're thinking about stuff I'll say this I think you're thinking about stuff that some promoters
probably should be thinking about maybe don't you know and that's that's on them
um but it shows that you're thinking you know outside the box now you like me too you're a vendor talk about is is it
difficult like being set up at your own show because you're trying to do your stuff and then you're you know you got
me maybe coming over and asking you a question and and others as well talking about either the difficulties or
frustrations with kind of wearing both of those hats at the same time so in the beginning it definitely was a struggle
to find the time of this I'm doing this and you know I have to have time for my own I have to go help with the problems
you know hey so and so can't find their table in the morning I'm trying to get my stuff set up um I definitely have
learned by doing Watertown I have relaxed a lot as a vendor I know that
you know the if the customers want to see your stuff they're gonna wait for your stuff and that's a big thing I see
a lot of vendors struggle within the early years they come in they think they have to be set up first thing and they
think they have to be set up first because if their stuff's out they're going to sell it if someone wants to buy a card they're going to buy a card you
can't you know have a tactic it's going to get it I've seen the people with the flashy lights in their cases they bring
in you know this large that's me that that's me they bring in a large buy you
know this big banner you know I'm buying today I pay X percent that's not me but the the light
the LEDs in the case I'm G I'm I'm guilty as as charge but but go ahead I
didn't mean to if the customer wants a card they're going to find you and I am
the biggest culprit of that I'm sure you've seen it I set my table up in the morning and you probably see me at my
table for about 30 40 minutes throughout the entire day it it just doesn't happen and I'm happy about that and because at
a show that we promote I don't want to sell my cards I want the other vendors you know be happy at the end of the day
yeah no doubt and and and the other thing too is you know you I've never had
trouble getting a hold of you like so you know that's a testament to you uh
you're not hard to find you're not hiding under your table um I like to set up early Andrew in my defense because
I'm one of those guys because I'm very slow and methodical in how I set up uh
you know it used to be worse I've actually my card used to be in like alphabetical order I used to have to
pack up I've kind of did away with that and came up with a a new quicker system you've probably seen me get out uh
sooner then when you first saw me doing that first show um but one of the reasons I like to get started early is
because I'm just I don't know why I'm just maybe it's age kicking in I'm just pretty methodical and slow and and the
stuff I have it just takes me a little bit to get set up so there was one show was it was your show in Watertown and
I'm usually set up with with my friend Nick and Chad and it was 10:15 or it was
9 15 it was when the show at that point was uh opening the doors at 9 and it was
9:15 and I was still like only half the showcases were filled with cards and
Nick turned to me and said Newman are you GNA like are you gonna like finish today because people are here in the
door and I had no idea and I'm like how the heck am I not done and uh you know
and Nick said I don't know you were here before me and Chad were what were you doing like were you in the bathroom for
30 40 minutes like it doesn't make it doesn't make any sense so because I'm a little bit and I've I've improved on
that since since that show but I'm always nervous about like I like to be done even if I'm sitting around for 30
minutes and I'm done and I'm set up I'm I'm I'm okay with that I just don't like feeling like um watching the clock and
it's a race between the doors opening and when I'm fully uh operational so
that's why I like to get an earli earlier St even now where I know like could I come 8:30 and still be done by
10:00 I I could but I rather come at 8 and sort of have that half an hour to
just kind of breathe and and and relax and that sort of thing so I'm guilty of
of being one of those guys that likes to get going sort of early yeah we're both the guys that talk also so even though
you know we got two hours of set up every person that comes through the door they talk to us yeah no you're you're
right and I that that story I told where I was still putting CS out and the doors
had been opened 15 minutes I and and Nick said what happened I really couldn't think I think what did happen
and I just because I talk so much I just think I had an extended conversation with someone that morning uh where I I
was talking and not putting cards out at the same time that I lost that time
talking and I couldn't make it up so so yeah I like to get I like to get going early for that reason uh because knowing
I have a big mouth and I might get slowed down by my own demise I'm not blaming anyone else but but myself so uh
yeah for sure um let's talk a little bit about the hobby right uh we were both
obviously active uh during the covid crescendo uh I think you agree uh you
know while the covid was obviously a bad thing and we still have still around not
in the same form or fashion it was during its its you know High Point um
The Hobby really benefited from it um like you said a lot of people became Sellers and then buyers at the same time
uh and really I call it like the Midas touch you could you could buy something on Monday and then turn around and sell
it on Tuesday and Wednesday for more than you paid for it was very hard to
screw up uh in the hobby uh then everything was sort of easier I don't
want to say easy but easier now that the dust is sort of settled prices have kind of settled back down I I tell people you
know people ask me what's the the biggest difference hobby wise and I think the biggest difference hobby wise
Andrew in my opinion is you have to be more smarter and strategic to if you're
a vendor to make the money that you were you know during the co period was just
easy uh like too easy I think now you have to make smarter purchasing decision
Smart in what you buy who you buy when you buy it timing as you well know is
always a factor uh you know you wear a vendor's head as well as should Pro would you agree and and how do you see
the the two time periods even though they're so close to each other uh it's sort of a different hobby now that it's
kind of settled settled back down yeah definitely Co I like to think of it as it was great for new for new vendors it
was the perfect time because you could not fail you could go to Walmart and buy a $30 Blaster and it sold for $100 on
eBay if you didn't open it there was no risk in anything you touched you look at now you walk into Walmart and there's
Blaster still sitting there and you can buy that Blaster and when you walk out of the store it's worth less than it was
on the Shelf it's it's a crazy thing and at the same point that during that time everyone saw that you could make money
that way we gained thousands of new vendors and it was great for the current
vendors because I don't want to say you took advantage of people but these new vendors they thought that everything was
like that you could buy a blaster and make money I can buy any card and make money they were were buying full
collections they were buying anything that came up to their table I'm guilty of that when I first became a vendor if
a card walked up to the table and they asked if I was buying I felt like I had to make an offer on the card like it's
sold for this on eBay I should be able to sell it and as time's gone on I'm sure you see the same thing yes a card
sells on eBay on Monday but in the time we're in now it might not sell again some of these cards you know in two or
three days are changing $50 or more yeah the Swig the swings are wider now timing
is you know we all know cops it's the the magic hobby word right and cop but
cops tell part of the story right like you just pointed out doesn't tell the whole story you know a cop like you said
last week may not be accurate anymore based on demand this week and um you
know so it's it's a great point you have to be smarter in uh I think we I'll say
we I'll throw you know we're both vendors um and this you know I think everybody this goes for you have to be
smarter in in what you buy when you buy and and the timing is and that goes for
selling too all right you got to no sort of you know it's like a card game no when to hold them no when to to fold
them and uh you know and uh you know if you and I'm a holder I'm a guy that you
know I know I've told you this you know I don't bring even though I bring a lot of stuff to a show there's stuff that I
don't put out that uh probably could sell but it's someone I think I'm going to be better off holding for the moment
and selling maybe at a later time sometimes that works out um I don't bet
a thousand uh no way and sometimes that doesn't work out right and so you've got
to you know you sometimes you take some LS I just I always when people ask me I
just say if I can take you know get more W's and L's then I'm then I'm successful
but if it's the other way around that's where you get sort of uh in trouble you know I've been I've been fortunate um I
think for me being a sports fan a huge sports fan sort of helps because you kind of you're you know you're your your
fingers on the pulse you kind of see uh what's going on you know sometimes you see stuff maybe in advance of someone
else who just reads a box score pulls out their phone and checks the score and
that sort of thing if someone is you know I think being I I do fantasy leagues uh I think gives me you know I'm
not saying a huge Advantage but a little built in Advantage too because you're you're already paying attention for that
reason alone and and I think it helps when it comes to buying in on on an
athlete or a player um you you agree with that assessment I know you're a sports fan too so yeah for sure it floes
me when I talk to vendors and they tell me they don't watch sports like how do you know when a person walks up to your
table of a card of a certain player and you have to look up who the player is that that just floes me if you're going
to be a vendor you should at least know the product you're selling yeah no I think I think here's the crazy part too
Andrew it's a great point and I I know that's the case I I've had those same conversations and it's probably more
than we even think like it's it's crazy to me I mean I'm in the hobby because
the New York City Kid in Me was a sports kid and then when I learned hey they make trading cards of sports I got as
many as I could so I was a sports fan first and then I got into the hobby now
I've been married to sort of both ever since and I think that's where the sort of that baked in Advantage is but I I
don't think that's as com maybe for you and me but I don't think that's like you just pointed out I don't think that's as
common place as it once was I think people are just hey there's some money to be made here I'm going to get into it
it I don't I'm I'm not a big Watcher sports or fantasy leagues or sports
betting or D daily fantasy leagues I just you know I'll just do the best I
can and you know it's it to me it's it's I don't want to say it's weird it's not weird but it's it's different than than
my Approach and and I guess it you know Different Strokes for different folks as they say and I think that's more common
than even me and you probably even realize and we do realize it but I think it's it's probably more than we even
realize yeah and it's not even just the vendors it's the it's the customers we have now they're doing this as their
side hustle and we all know things are getting more and more expensive not just in the hobby but but in life so these
people are trying to maximize their money I had a guy come up in Watertown and tried to sell me a card on Sunday
and I had to ask him a couple times I'm like what are you trying to sell me and I'm like his name's Giannis like I don't
know what you're trying to pronounce here but his name is Giannis yeah no I get it too and and
it's crazy but again you know I guess to to each their own and and you know it's
I always get a chuckle whether that happens to me or hearing like you talk about it but it's and that you know
that'll always be the case like you you know uh again there's people in it for different perspectives different reasons
maybe they're not sports fan they just look at cards and as commodities and
sort of like day trading hey I don't have to say the guy's name right I just show you this and and this is what I
need to get for it and and and that sort of thing time to hear from one of our great sponsors but sports card Nation

Rob's got you covered let's go you are listening to the sports card Nation
Podcast coming down the home stretch here uh Andrew you know we've seen more
shows uh and most you know in many cases they're well-run especially with yours
one of my fears and I I'll ask someone who who promotes shows right can we get to a point where there's too many and
sort of the the the bloom comes off the rose I mean everyone loves going to shows myself included yourself included
but is there like a saturation point I know I've done that talked about that on the podcast when I've had not had guests
on and just kind of tackling that you know idea myself but you know as as a
promoter of shows is there a balance like that can be tipped too far the other way where we have too many shows
and and and the luster comes off 100% uh so for example I Know Myself
most of my time I spend is I I research every other show that's in a three-hour radius I never want when I look at a
calendar and I say this event's on this day this event's here for example we want we're going to have another Fulton
show and we're looking at the calendar for the upcoming ones and we're like we can't have another one this year because
there's so many other shows in such a close proximity there's only so much money in
the hobby there's only so many times the cards can move from one vendor to another I think you definitely will see
def in the near future less shows and some of these smaller shows falling off because it's not the covid era anymore
there's not the money changing hands like it was it's back to being the collectors that are there for because
they love the cards and I think that was a big part of what made Fulton so successful they I didn't see the people
there that you know I'm looking for this card I want to make money on it they were excited this is the first time
we've had something in this community and we want to find cards of our favorite players that's a great thing and when
you have too many shows you can walk into any show and find a Derek Jeter you can walk into any show and find your mik
Piaza where if you don't have the oversaturation it's so much better on
both the vendor standpoint and the customer standpoint because it is something special when it does happen
yeah I agree uh we we have very s thoughts uh there because I do believe
you know even with shows that I set up with Andrew I'm sort of selective and I'm not a promoter right I'm just like
you know you know plus I'm married too so I try to I try to be home sometimes
uh for my wife although I think there's time she's like go do shows get out of
here but but uh but you know all joking aside right I I like that you're
thinking along those lines right like I yeah I could do a show every week you know in at this venue um but again that
that doesn't make business sense for me it doesn't make business sense uh for the vendors that would uh potentially
set up at that show and I do believe there is you know a Tipping Point and
not necessarily your shows but some of the less well-run shows if they overdo
it right that's the the risk they're taking where they won't be successful there won't be enough people coming
through the door as customers there won't be a waiting list to set up at the
show and and the opposite could start to go back uh the other way like it's a
great point right while the covid period was was great for the hobby uh brought
in new people as well that are still in it and that's a that's a positive the terrain in the landscape is different
now too so um what what worked then it won't necessarily work uh now anymore
with with with the being different so it's it's you know Kudos on you for
thinking like that where maybe another promoter right is just seeing dollar
signs and then again they're nothing necessarily wrong with that it's America uh you know we have a capitalistic
capitalistic system which I I agree we should have but it's got to be more than
right the the S with the two lines to it's got to be more than the the dollar sign and while that's important you know
we're all uh as vendors we're running a business as a pro promoter and a vendor in your case uh you're running two
businesses in a sense it's and and financial is important if that's all
you're doing it for then that's where trouble uh can can lead so I was it was
refreshing to hear you kind of say to as a promoter because I think if I ask the same question to 10 promoters maybe
three of them say what you said and seven just say no you know uh there's
there's not enough sh shows or I'm going to you know uh we need more and I'm you know so it's nice to hear you kind of
give an honest assessment uh when ask that question yeah like for example I'll take I'll take some of the smaller shows
like ogdenburg we could have an ogdenburg show every month and yeah it could be profitable for a couple people
but for the people of the hobby you're just going to kill it for the customers I don't ever want a customer to walk
into the show and say wow that was not a good experience that's always the number one thing that we look at for any show
is we want the vendors that are there to be happy have a good variety we want it to be you know set up at a time where
it's not conflicting with other local events we want every customer to walk through the door to leave happy yeah no
doubt and uh maybe if more promoters thought like that uh they'd be better they'd be better promoters to truth be
told but uh kudos to you for taking a show from the ground level and making it
what it is now and now you know bringing it to some other towns and cities that
either have never had shows before or very little and you know now those
people in those areas can attend the show and enjoy the hobby so uh I didp my
cap to you I know I've I've told you that in person but uh I'll say that as part of uh the podcast uh we always give
the guest Andrew kind of the the final word uh give out websites social media
handles where people can find out when the next uh nny show uh is going to be
and where in times and that s so tell people where to go and and where to find
yeah so the quickest way to find us is just do a Google search nny promotions Northern New York promotions nny uh
you're gonna first thing it pops up is gonna be a Facebook page our Facebook page is has tons of activity on it it's
posted probably more than it needs to be we probably post a flyer every day
leading up to a show for a month there is never a time you're not going to see our flyer our Flyers have a QR code on
the bottom that links us to them everything also on our page you'll see there's an email it's nny show
promotions gmail.com goes right to my phone I have never taken longer than
probably an hour to respond which definitely has got people to the point where they now expect that instant
response so we definitely do our best keeping everyone happy yeah no again uh
you know you've always been accommodating you know and you always you're to me you're a go-getter too
right you're trying to make it happen you came up to me at the fairground show in Syracuse and said hey man I got this
show you might have heard about it which I had uh what about doing this there I'd
love to see it and like I said like I've told the story already you know I I didn't lock in I just said man I'm
willing to to do it it's not too far I can do it and uh and here we are all
these I don't know how many it's been I think over a year so for me I mean the show's been around around a year and a
half now yeah so where does the time it's crazy and uh like I don't even know
how long it's been that's how long it's been and so that again that's a testament to a good show and again I I
look forward to uh you know attending uh and and and I know other people do too
because I get the messages even though I'm not you and I'm not the promoter people will message me as like sports
car Nation hey when is the Watertown show when are you going to be in Watertown and so people are looking
forward to it too and I think you know that once a month is is is a great for
that kind of show right it goes into hey we're gonna do it twice a month and now some of that luster comes off I'm not
saying you're you are you are but I'm just saying you know I think that's a great you know uh a number uh for for
and every city and every venue is different right and so it's not cookie cutter but I think you've you know You'
built something into what's a small show on paper but has that Big Show uh feel
and that's not as easy as people think if you think it is try it yourself and see how that see how that turns out so I
get customers that ask me all the time they're like hey I'm I'm getting ready to start a show and I look at him and
I'm like okay where are you having it well I found a place do they have tables I didn't think about that okay what what
do you have for paperwork do you have a contract do you have a liability policy in place like all of these things
they're like okay how about you just run a show here since you know how to do it and it's I used to be so accommodating
like sure send me some details we'll look at your place and yeah I I think it's just yes we could run all these
shows but we want to run good shows I think that's the number one thing and like you said I definitely am the
go-getter I I went out every one of our vendors in the beginning are people that I S you know I went out and I you know
I'm like hey this is a guy I see their stuff it's going to be a good add-on for our show so that the first you know six
months it was all people that I had previously looked at their stuff because I walk shows as a customer as well I
know what I'm looking for and if someone has a table that I think's ran really well I'm going to say you'd be a good
fit for our show but if I walk the show and I see that your cards marked four times what it's worth I don't really
know if it's a benefit to have a table filled up that's you know the vendors going to say they didn't have a good show the customers are going to walk up
and say I don't know what's wrong with that guy his cards are overpriced it's it's definitely something you got to look at and I think that's definitely
shown through for us because I spent all those hours in the beginning reaching out to vendors and now they won't stop
reaching out to me everyone now they they know me in the hobby I go to any show in the area they're walking up and
asking about the upcoming nny show yep you you you built a a small show into
what I'll call a jug or not small show again that feels like a bigger show and
and then and when I say bigger show I mean that in a positive way sometimes you know biggest shows are not always a
men in a positive way but in this case uh no doubt positive well Andrew uh you
know this without saying uh continued success uh glad to be a small part of
that success and uh again I'm I'm counting the days to to the next Watertown show and uh thanks for coming
on should be a huge one this will be this actually the one where JSA is g to be there yeah y most definitely yeah
most people reach this will Air yeah real quick this will air before that show too so again uh November Watertown
show will have JSA on site to authenticate and certify uh your
autograph items but go ahead just real quick and brief talk about that yeah so
JSA I mean the largest authentication company there is most Show's dream of
having them come uh JSA actually once sent a undercover vendor to our show
that we didn't even know about they sent a vendor they had them set up at the end of the show the vendor walks up to me
and he goes hey I'm here on behalf of JSA I really like how you ran your show he goes I couldn't get over how you know
welcoming you were everyone was talking to me he goes he goes I did better at this show and I do it you know shows down in New York City he goes this is
this is great you guys were you know on the table it told me these are the local places that delivered to here for lunch
it we we covered all that spots and at the time we're like yeah it'd be cool if JSA came but we weren't you know going
out of our way to sayos and we got to make this happen then out of the blue JSA just calls me they're like we want
to do the show we've heard great things and we looked at it I talked to my partner I'm like do you think it's a
good idea and I talked to all the local lcss and I'm like do you guys think you have customers that have autographs that
need it how quick can they be ready and we decided on November 9th they're going to be here they're going to you know do
all your stuff in person and they're hoping to do it quarterly as long as it turns out good there you go well they're
going to get some of my money and to look at some of of my items so it might
be just fruitful I might make them just fruitful on November 9th myself Andrew
and be a little bit lighter in in my bank account but but maybe have some some items that uh with that
certification right are are more marketable and and easier if if I do
decide to ever move on from them uh to do so so like you said it's a great
service uh they provide they're looked at as one of the top if not the number one uh authentication Service and so uh
again that small show right doing Big Show uh things uh another feather uh in
your C cap so uh congratulations uh there as well so uh with that being said
thanks for making some time uh for us tonight and uh I'll see you soon I guess
yeah I'm gonna see you on Sunday there we go yeah yep so we we we we see a lot
