Nation what is up everybody Welcome to episode 298 of sports card Nation hope
everyone is doing SW out there if you went to Fanatics Fest I hope you had
enjoyed it and hope you had safe travels the to and fro if you traveled I did not
make it so I I can't attest to anything uh firsthand but the gentleman that uh
is going to be on today's episode uh this is part two of our conversation from last week's show he was there uh
representing Zion cases and that's Clint Anderson so today is the conclusion
of that conversation uh we're going to get to that uh shortly but uh
unfortunately sometimes you know life happens and uh a friend of mine that
does very very known in the hobby uh uh Dr James Becket his uh mom passed away
Jane Beckett and so I want to send out you know condolences to the entire
Becket family during this uh difficult time and uh you know Dr Becket is is
work is synonymous uh with the hobby but he he you know like he said on his show he
came from great parents that that's who shaped him uh and uh you know so
thinking about uh the Becket family during this difficult time uh with the loss of Jane his mom uh very active uh
in Ministry so if you you really uh want to do something a couple things uh if
you go to The Village church.net or

Ministries she was heavily uh involved and and uh if you want to do something
uh in L of flowers uh I'm sure the family and Dr Jim would greatly
appreciate that so uh sad news there but uh you know wanted to uh pay my respects

cases you're one of to be like you know you're talking about shows and oh there show you're you're all over the the the
country uh you know at the time of this uh release you're probably behind the
Zion tell what Fanatics Fest the first incarnation of that so we'll have to
talk to you I'm gonna try to get there for a day I I don't know if I'm going to it's not it's actually in my hometown
I'm a New York City kid the cues um I got to try to see if I can get there I'm
I'm Effy um I I don't want to promise but we'll see um but you're you know
because of the brand and and what you represent and the importance you you almost I mean you have to be at at these
shows you know what I mean in there and that's that's a a good thing but it's also work right I mean you know and and
so to keep that you know that that strangle hold on on the number one spot if you will you have to uh put in this
work and the grind and and to reap the rewards and you know I think a lot of times people you know think it's easy
right you just one night you just mock up something on on you know in a a Sketchbook or a legal pad and and it's
it's so much more to it than that I'm sure even you like even though you're a smart guy you know you learn you you
said I've learned stuff along the way in those five six seven years uh to get to
to where are and I think again that's a testament uh to you I know even just you
know you mentioned the the recent National in Cleveland I got to come in early with the media pass and I know I
was sitting at the mascot Booth Ezra's a friend of mine so me and Danny black were sitting there and watching your
team just come in with you know rollers of of in the work that uh goes involved and
that's just bringing stuff in it's not the design element yeah a whole that's a
whole another show yeah no it is and it is uh you know I talked to a lot of guys in the industry whether it's cards or a
business or a product or something that they're interested in doing um it it's
not for everybody like you you mentioned back there I mean at the end of the day some guys fail and and and I don't even know that it's really failure I think
it's just maybe you get in and maybe it's just not for you right uh I don't know that it's a it's a failure but I
know that if you really want it um you can go get it for sure um and it may
take some time you know you may not see the the fruits of that labor initially but I think that you know for an example
you know four years ago three years ago um if you probably ever went in and asked about us in a show they'd be like
oh yeah you know I think they're over there or something like that but now I think you know you'll you'll you'll know
because we go to every show they know who I am they know who my team is we've got relationships built you know it's
very hard to get rid of us in this industry now because of what we built over just the last three and a half four
years really um as far as like especially in in the community but but to to kind of go to that even you know
as as Kind of a Funny Story you know shows are are something that we love to be involved in we love to go to as many
shows as we can obviously we're human so we we we can't make everything and that
does um that does hurt I I want to be everywhere if I can um and and and
sometimes we can't make a show that doesn't feel great for us but it is part of life and and so you know we do have
programs in place that can help that if there are some shows listening and and they want us involved we do have some
options that that doesn't necessarily bring us there but we can bring the activation of what Zion brings and you
guys can make some money doing it you know and have uh at least some some opportunities there but my first three
shows that I set up at I didn't sell a case John I didn't sell one uh literally
literally got actually made fun of of uh in SC off that quite a bit too uh so
well he he who laughs last yeah exactly laughs I can't say he who laughs last
wins so yeah there you go yeah they can have the first one you know but and I I
had a positive outlook I always just said hey look man it may not be for you right and I I sell that to people until
this day you know if they come up to the show and they well this doesn't work for me d d du and it's like hey man it may
not you know and that's I'm sorry you know I we'll do see what we can figure out see where we go from here but you
know in the beginning I I I had multiple uh multiple people uh come over and you
know and that's that's an unfortunate I always I always try to be as positive as I can in the industry I usually um
unless you know unless I feel like it's it's worth the the time or if I have the place to do it um I don't usually be too
negative on anything because it's like yeah I don't really know that's my place at all but the fact that people have
that open ability to just be like yeah this is dumb you know or whatever that I don't know that's that that's more of a
testament I think to them than anything but uh but to know that we were scoffed at it and told it ain't G to work it it
was just funny to see that that it did not come to you know fruition for them at least it's a it's a little bulletin
board material if you will I've always said too Clint like stuff like that come
like you said it's more an indictment on on the source someone's unhappy and they
just project that unhappy try to make other people uh unhappy and and that
sort of thing and then the other side of that coin is when now that you are successful right everyone wants to take
a shot at the king and and away or try to chip away at that armor so whe
whether it's beginning or when you when you're at the top of the mountain it's it's it's both ends of the spectrum
there and you and you literally you know Hunter you hit the nail on the head on the other end because now now what we face is just kind of like we said a
minute ago we have um it's easy to knock us off because we've created the the
Baseline so when you go and go oh that I really like that case you know and we do
have some knockoffs out there we got some Amazon guys and things like that uh you know it's easy for them to just take
a picture of our product or buy it and just send it over somewhere wherever that manufacturer is or in the US or
whatever and just say hey I want something like this you know and it's like yeah that took me a long time to
develop and all you had to do was just take a picture of it and say this is what I want um so that that is uh that
is while I'll probably Tire tirelessly work um to innovate and make sure we're
always on The Cutting Edge um adding you know what I think are valuable and functional options to you know to the
collecting uh opportunity you know with cases and some other things that we're going to get into in these next few
years that we've got plans to that I think will always put us on the front end um and you know with our with our
licensing you know opportunities and things like that that we have also uh we're we'll be releasing one here soon
that that is is getting uh finalized uh with another licensing agreement that on
top of our MLB licensing that we have that's only going to solidify us even more and put us in a a way bigger uh
driver seat uh you know opportunity uh moving forward so it'll be big too so
when we get that we'll have to try to figure out something to to get you an idea what that is because it's a pretty Monster one yeah there that's called a
tease and but it's coming as you said it's coming down the turnpike it'll be
announced when it's time to be announced and that's great with the licensing right that's huge you know that I'm not
I'm preaching to the choir uh here I mean everyone can rep their favorite major league baseball team and and that
sort of thing and that just that just brings another element and if someone you know you mentioned copycats and
unfortunately that's not just in in the uh case or backpack industry that it's
anything if anyone can take the shortcut way to try to capitalize on someone
else's efforts and work people G try to do it but I think the licens SC Not that
you can't do that too but now you're going into where you there can be repercussions for doing more
repercussion at that way um and that set you apart from those uh copycat folks uh
more not that that's the only thing but even more more so that separates yeah you uh from from that and that's good
and that's again that's you efforting and grinding to how do we do how do we do this better and continue and and
you've added products right you you know the backpacks and which are becoming synonymous at any c I don't care what
what state or what part of the country or out of the country in other country you know we we forget the the hobby is a
worldwide it is no yeah phenomenon so design is just not a United States thing
it's a a worldwide hobby hobby thing and even you know seeing you uh in Cleveland
uh looking at what you you had on you got a safe now uh like all different you know different size backpacks obviously
different size uh case it's just and like you said there's more coming it's not like all right we're done we this is
all we can do uh you're always thinking outside uh the box and I think again
that's what separ at you from maybe the rest of the pack and I will say this you know the last few years and and the
shows I've been at there's been a lot less other case companies setting up and
I think know not that I don't root against people that's not what what I mean by this but I think that just the
The Testament to the Quality uh and afford you know everything wrot affordability the quality and the
offerings that you have it's like I'm not going to be able to go in there and and you know battle in in in the ring so
I you know it's becomes a business decision so again more of a tesas to to
you yeah no folks that laughed those folks that laughed early on I don't know
if they're listening or where they you know hey how about this I had one I I knew I knew him because I'd been at the
shows and he actually when I when I first set up he didn't know I was I was doing this um he was actually one that
came up kind of scof said something you know he just didn't see it was going to be anything and it it was probably three
or four years later I seen him at the same show and I was set up again and he came up and he's like uh he's like
aren't you glad I gave you this idea and I was like what I'm like he just took me
so off guard I was like what are you talking about I'm like you were literally the one one of the ones that
was like scoffing at me the whole time he's like no I wasn't he's like I was telling you this was such a great idea
and I'm thinking okay whatever I'm not even going to get into it with you but yeah well it is literally that yeah
there is I'm sure um you know to each their own people are going to like what they like but yes the ones that that
probably said some things in the beginning I'm sure didn't know that we would be 140,000 cases in you know at
this point and going wow okay never mind maybe this is part of you know what it is to to actually collect because you
know as you know John we're the the collecting has has has boomed and you know everybody uses the word boom but
it's just the the cards are so much now and products so much and so you know our our little boxes of cardboard and things
like that were fine of what they were 10 years ago but it's just not that anymore you know and and even to that Testament
you know when you talk about the new products and things like that you know we got the safes and um you know
partnered with a a company called CV Vault there I you know vetted and talked with them and and we think it's a good product and they got a good vision and
what they're going to bring out with some other opportunities and then you know adding the luggage line we just brought out during you know right before
the national which I think is going to be massive um just for the shows right I mean that's a now you can bring luggage
instead of a case and walking around and it's got wheels everything um and then adding slab Museum which was another
business uh that has some cool products and you know it it's basically this this
um this kind of show piece that you can have on your desk or you know in a closet uh that's I'm I'm looking at one
there you go yeah you got yeah and it's a it's just a you know it's basically what we used to have which would be a
cardboard two- slotted box or a one slot but now it just looks good and it's got an opportunity to be a showpiece and and
discussion piece when you got you know friends and family over or something like that or or something like that and
it's cool it's it's a cool piece to have as a storage versus uh the briefcase
option that we you know briefcase options that we have um it's just yeah all these other little segments acrylic
looks nice when it's really clean and clear and and it's got a good um uh a
good design to it and I think the slab Museum and some of the other options and opportunities they're going to bring
down the road also I think they just going to solidify our business in the acrylic side of things as well for the
industries yeah no doubt that's the one thing too that set Zion apart and your company plan is you will take some of
these other ideas or or companies or products that other people have designed
and take them on your wings say hey I like this product like I can help you right you so you're willing to do that
where I think someone else maybe in your position maybe would be less willing or stubborn or like hey I didn't do the you
know I didn't design this so you're on your own or knock them off right yeah
like I'll just go do it myself like what happens to you right so I think it it's
a testament to your work ethic and and knowledge and expertise and just
business acument in general right that hey this is I I would use this whether I
designed it or not and now that I've built this company up there I can I can
expose it to more people that's that's what I can do and um I think that's
really cool that you're like that and U able to do that where I think others may
not be able to cross that uh threshold where where you can and it just gives people more choices right I mean you
know like I said I was at your table from a rolling suitcase a safe
multi-size backpacks cases there's other stuff coming uh as you mentioned like
you you don't rest on your laurels yeah and it's just I think that again that's
speaks volumes and because you're like that's like what what's next right it's almost like watching a TV show and it's
like the Cliffhanger you got to tune in next week to see what happens right well
I you know one of the things um I like to do uh is not get too uh cart before the
horse because I do have a lot of shelf ideas uh and even to the extent of you know there's some items that have came
out that I was working on or or had some ideas around that I just you know ended up shelfing and not really even messing
around with because it was already being done by somebody else and what's the point of me going in and you know
essentially disrupting that piece uh unless I felt like maybe there's an opportunity to make something really
better and it's it's a lot different um than um than their product there's no
need to go out and just knock somebody else's you know stuff off and and see where it goes time for a quick break but

[Music] show we we've got some cool stuff coming
and there is no doubt um that we'll be adding new products that aren't on the
you know on the industry uh um Trail right now um you know we we're introducing for an example too to
to kind of highlight the mag proo a little bit the ma pro has been a a massive hit I believe you know we've
sold about 270,000 units in the last um nine months
so it's been a I think a big hit uh it's going to be featured in tops luminaries
this year so like we're we're actually working with Fanatics and tops and and
and creating that experience to make it a little bit more of uh just your
typical and John you know this you see some of these products Dynasty and luminaries and things like that and it
comes into one touch with a nice little sticker over the top and I'm not knocking that at all I we've all collected it and I think it's cool and
it's got its own little uh kind of place in the in the industry um but you know pitching that idea to the Topps team and
the Fanatics team and saying hey look you know here's some mockups this is some ideas you know and I use some of
the the in case products that they've done you know uh where it comes with one card like the dynasties and things in
The Luminaries um you know and said hey look this what it could look like presentation wise um and you know is
this an interest that you think you would like to add to some of the products in your in your fold uh for the
you know for the community for the industry to you know to have a different look than just the one touch or the
magnetic holder with a with a sticker on it so uh it'll literally have a luminaries label at the top here
luminary's card nice little seal over it and it's going to come ready to go you know uh like you basically just got it
in a in a one touch or whatever but it'll be in in the new Mac Pro uh with you know some cool activations on the
back end and uh you know a cool design on the on the front label as well so I
think the Mac Pro we've got we've got about 12 other skews coming on that that are going to be some interesting uh
flavors to add I think to that type of a product uh that's only going to make the collecting experience funner better uh
brandability you know a lot of our Breakers use that because it just you know they can put their own custom label at the top um which we can help out
because we've got our own custom label team as well uh or you can do it in-house you know we're we're open to whatever you want to do it with you know
but um I think that mag proo opportunity is going to be a big one down the line for us and you know what it can do to uh
to help brand some of these other businesses that may not have a product that they can just throw a label in
there you know and and and do anything with that that makes it look good and present the card yeah it's a it's a
great Point too by you Clint is like the Hobby's evolving like that might have been great three or four years ago but
we can do it better now we have different Technologies different Plastics different Machinery y whatever
the case we have stuff gets better generally speaking so so why not do it
better like you said you you went to Tops and say hey we can we can do this it's going to be a win-win for for us
for you and The Collector who gets that card in that mag Pro that's that's like
that instead of and like you said nothing wrong with the sticker uh but that was then right and and times change
the hobby evolves just like every everything up probably maybe even at a faster rate than than some other stuff
for sure yeah especially right now yeah our boom that we've had over the last four years I mean you got new stuff and
ideas I mean we've created we've created monsters out here in a good way we got a lot of guys out here just doing their
thing you know and and a lot of innovative ideas and uh strategies that
I don't think people see I think so we've got a lot of value in our industry from uh just the the wisdom of being
able to go through some of this stuff and learn it and fine-tune it and figure out what their Niche is and how they
want to do some things you know in this industry it's been it's been fun to watch for sure so I I gotta ask you
obviously like we talk about your grinding your at the shows you're at most of them um you get much of a chance
like as a collector even to walk around to the show maybe pick up a few things like talk about you know is is it hard
with with running Zion um and and being a collector to maybe get away from the
table and like hey guys I'm give me an hour I gotta check out I'll be is it is
it difficult or make y know if I say hey give me an hour I walk away for five
minutes and they're texting hey we need you back so no no I will say my team
does very well and to be honest they've uh again I I preach you know and and I
and a lot of guys that that we work with and girls that we work with you know is adaptability and making sure finding
Solutions things like that so we pride ourselves on that my team is actually really good if I if I need to take a
step away I can 100% do that now as the business owner a lot of times I don't
like to do that because there are opportunities you know and and um for us
like when we run uh shows simultaneously on a weekend you know like uh the Fanatics Fest you know weekend we've got
two other shows that we're actually going to be present at as well and um
sometimes I get a little blowback from some of the other shows that that I'm not there but like I try to explain to
them I try to do my best to essentially make the rounds that I can but I can't be everybody everywhere one place I got
to kind of pick pick uh where I'm going what what's probably the most value of of where I need to be um and not to
diminish anything anybody else's shows doing because everybody's doing some really cool things and awesome stuff um
but of times it might also be that you know we've had them in the fold for a lot longer too and things like that and
have some relationships there but but generally if I want to get away I can get away um and and do some you know
looking problem is John is nobody has IO to sumu cars so uh I go look and I get
told no a lot so there you go you got to clone yourself so you can be at three
shows I've had some people yeah and I got people they'll even message me and they'll say hey um why aren't you at
this show you can't take days off and I'm like I ain't I'm at another show like I'm not taking a day off so you
know you tell them like you know there's other more than one show at one time in in in the our industry is United States
yeah is a lot bigger now there there there's there's more every month there's more shows I said this on this podcast
Clint there's more show there shows now in cities have never had them before
whether they're a small 40 table 30 table in some smaller town they're
getting them and yeah I mean shows are where cities or towns have never had
them before starting to pop up in those so you know like you said it's it's it's
hard to you know being uh it's impossible to be in more than one yeah not hard it's
impossible you have to work on the the Zion clone cloning machine well see
that's why so what we do in a lot of offer yeah there is the there well I hear cloning's happening so you know I I
guess uh you got conspiracy theorists you know out here supposedly you got clones of of certain people out there in
the world but uh you who knows maybe we'll be old enough to see that happen uh I maybe retire at that point but you
know it it'll be uh pointless but but there's no doubt just get just get a couple guys you know we all have like
dopple gangers just get a couple guys that look like you look like me and just yeah and just send them to whatever show
put his Z on hat put it low and put him in the back yeah oh yeah Clint here he's in the back just tell him just tell him
everything you need to know or maybe questions they get asked and and there's problem problem solved exactly well one
of the things we try to do John though too to speak to them show uh the show piece because it is a really a hot topic
for us we get we get uh inquiries you know every week multiple of hey can you
come to our show hey can you help with this event hey this is going on and you know we want to try to do the best we
can in any way to accommodate and be involved and uh trade nights cool stuff
that's going on giveaways things like that and it is hard again like uh like you said I can't be at one you know two
placees at the same time time so that's tough um but we we do again offer some opportunities where um you know we can
essentially help you know facilitate some stuff at your show where you could have a little Zion set up and you know
essentially make a little money selling the cases uh and you know get that experience at least for your show by
having a few things out there uh and we work with you in those regards as well so that that is an opportunity we always
want to bring that experience we know what it is at in live you know time you get the family you get the kid you get
the you know the guy that doesn't know what it is there's all different types of collectors and and when they're coming up and they're trying to figure
out what this is or or they already know and they need a Zion case you know we want to make sure uh in all shows that
that opportunity is afforded them um you know whether it's us doing it or somebody else that wants to kind of help
take a little bit of the Reign uh and do that as well so yeah no doubt it's nice to hear you say hey like we might not be
able to be there physically but that doesn't mean Zion can't have a presence yeah there in some some way shape or or
or form again thinking outside of that that box right it's easy just to say
sorry I'm not gonna be at your show and end the story doesn't have doesn't have to be as as cut and dry that I gotta ask
you this one last question I know we're we're up against the time here um the Zion name where where does that come
from so uh I'm a I'm a religious person
I got some Faith um and so Zion is Mount Zion which in the context of of old
scriptures is basically the top the Pinnacle uh so it's essentially the city on the hill so my you know it's a little
bit of an analogy in a word or or you know some sort of a reference to being at the top uh is basically the idea
around that and also kind of um uh giving all essentially the thanks and
everything that we do as a business to to my faith and and what we do there to God to be honest with you that's that's
the kind of the source from what we do a lot of things so that's the reason that that is uh called Zion cases a lot of
people think it's Zion Williamson it is not uh just a just a heads up um we have
we have had that uh that said multiple times uh people come up great marketing
strategy and I'm like oh yeah thanks I'm thinking you know maybe they're talking about our I don't know I don't know if
that's a great trust me we had that yeah I'm like wait we're I hope people don't think we're
associated with this this guy you know in some way and um but yeah it's uh it
it is not Zion Williamson it is 100% our own uh uh
actual reference of uh you know Zion as the Mount Zion City on aspect so it's
it's it's what that's what I thought I didn't want to assume so I asked and here's the here's the nice thing you
know when you name it that right there's no guarantees of where uh uh but I think you lived up uh you know a few years lat
I think you're living up uh to the name and it and it makes even more sense now
than than than ever before and for sure man kind of saw you kind of saw what it
was going to be and uh you you lived up to it and to me Beyond even so no I
agree with you John I'm in the same boat as the owner I feel the same way I couldn't never believe that we would be
here real yeah and but again it's everything we spoke about right the the
hard work the thinking outside the box the grinding the open to new ideas so
many people are not they're just kind of rigid and stubborn and it can cost you
right and I'm not even talking just financially just in general and uh uh but I you know you're kind of different
and it's it's made you successful and it's made Zion the the brand a verb
again it's become a a verb you know people don't even say have to say case no more they just say put it in my Zion
right like you say anything else like what is that have people know it's like
a just a given and a known and uh again Kudos kudos to you and your team and and
everyone involved I appreciate that for real it's it's joh yeah well I appreciate I know
you're busy you know you made some time for us we'll have you back as well anytime you want to announce something
new uh you're more than welcome but for those listening I think most people probably know but for for those that
don't Point them in the right direction where they can see uh where they can order and and buy the products that you
offer maybe see your show schedule so they can see if you're how close that
you are to maybe an area there and uh Point him in those right directions yeah
for sure uh online zon cases.com real easy on that one um we got socials up on
every every uh account there accounts up on every social and then if we're not in the stores near you let them know I mean
I'm sure we can get it in there we've got a wholesale program but we are in a in about 650 stores in the US currently
um so you you can always find something or or something uh through them if you ever need that outlet and then obviously
the shows you know we're at 60 something shows this year uh we do pretty much
every major sports uh show uh that's in the industry and a lot of the TCG uh
shows as well so um you know we're we're pretty well-versed and we're pretty saturated along all those show aspects
and most the times that the shows just ah heads up if you're ever looking for a case and you you know we're going to be there we run 20% off at every show as a
as a promo price so you can get a little discount also by just meeting us at a show and going from there so say much
shipping you get it right in hand I mean yeah it's like buying a card in person
rather than off eBay right so the same it's the same difference so yeah there
you go for those scored at home right 60 shows a year there's 52 weeks in a year
so do do a little do a little math there like you're doing like like you said
you're doing multiple shows at the same time and again a testament to to the
Grind so appreci John uh you know keep keep up what you're doing uh it's exciting to see what's
around the next corner and uh uh thanks for coming on we'd love to have you back
