SPEAKER 1: Here's a gentleman who's a fierce advocate and ambassador for this great hobby.

SPEAKER 1: He has his finger on the pulse of the hobby. However, his voice is nowhere as smooth as mine.

SPEAKER 1: But he does try.

SPEAKER 1: Here is John Newman.

SPEAKER 2: What is up everybody? Episode 2 43 of Sports coordination. Back again. I first show, post National, where we're home and back. I know we ran the Hobby Pelusa episode last week while we were at the National. We'll be a shorter episode. Got two on the floor. Quick interviews with, two people I consider very good friends, Peter Steinberg from SGC, the president, of them and the great sponsor of the show, by the way.

SPEAKER 2: And Mike Summer of Wax peck Hero, caught up with them on the floor of the National and, did a quick, on the road, sort of, interview. So, we'll, we'll get to those before, you know, I'll also kind of just kind of wrap up some of my thoughts before those interviews as well. But, let's keep the intro short and get this show started.

SPEAKER 3: Time for our hobby is the people announcer of the week.

SPEAKER 3: Yeah, this is the card carver. Remember the hobby is the people, if you'd like to be the hobby is the people announcer of the week. Do a wave or MP3 file and send it to Sports Card Nation PC at gmail dot com.

SPEAKER 3: Hi, this is Pat Hughes Cubs announcer. Coming to you from the Sports card shop in beautiful New Buffalo, Michigan. The Gocher family has built an incredible place here for collectors to buy, sell and trade cards and memorabilia. Be sure to stop by and let them show you around the Sports card shop dot com. Connecting sportss, athletes, the hobby and collectors around the world.

SPEAKER 4: Hi, this is Alan Pinkett and I'm here to tell you, the Gocher family has done it again.

SPEAKER 4: They've just opened up the sport card shop in downtown Valparaiso, Indiana and it is awesome.

SPEAKER 4: If you're a collector, you need to check this place out.

SPEAKER 4: Tell them Allen sent you and get a free gift on your first visit.

SPEAKER 2: Are you a new Sports cards collector or someone returning to the hobby? Maybe you're just looking for a friendly trustworthy hobby community to hang out with and enjoy collecting Midwest Box brands has been bringing collectors together for many years with affordable breaks, helpful and a discord group packed with generous people who genuinely care about the hobby and other collectors.

SPEAKER 2: Also remember to check out Midwest Box brakes marketplace for brakes packs and single cards from over 300 trusted sellers apply to sell today at ISO dot GG forward slash Midwest Box brakes.

SPEAKER 2: All right. Some quick thoughts. Before we get to the two interviews, I wound up walking 25 miles between Wednesday and Saturday according to my phone and I had some back patches, some pain patches that I brought assuming my back would hurt. Never used one. So lucky and fortunate there, I know there's been reports of some COVID outbreaks since the show, Brian Gray unfortunately came down with it, some others.

SPEAKER 2: So far so good here. I did get COVID last year in Atlantic City.

SPEAKER 2: But ok, so far here and I think, you know, that's gonna be kind of the nature of the beast going forward on, on events where there's a lot of people attending. This, the National, the National itself said this is the new record holder, beating the Anaheim National of 1991.

SPEAKER 2: But with the 200 square extra 200,000 extra square feet, I tell you what didn't feel overly overly crowded. It was more spacious than the last Chicago National. I went to, I will say this, the displays, you know, especially in the corporate area were not gaudy other than wild card, wild card had a, a big one that really surprised me.

SPEAKER 2: I didn't, I didn't know they were. I don't know if they're doing that well or they're really going big on display is kind of, you know, hey, we're here and buy our products. We, we'll, we'll have to see how that goes. CCG had, like they, like they said, a carnival atmosphere with video games and ski ball and, and that sort of thing.

SPEAKER 2: SGC was very busy. Matter of fact, you, you'll hear Peter Steinberg. We really had to work to get that interview because they were so busy. Ps A was fairly busy. Beckett was on and off. Sometimes I'd go by there. They'd be a little busy other times, not, not as much and you know, had fun at the show, couple dinners.

SPEAKER 2: We did a couple of main stages. Those main stages will make will be audio episodes at some point after I edit them and, and get them ready for air time. Also, video will be uploaded at some point to YouTube as well. But had a blast as always the five days go quick.

SPEAKER 2: And a couple funny airplane stories, I'll save for another time. But again, count down down the days now to Cleveland where I can drive again much like Atlantic City and looking forward to that and, just had a great time meeting people. I didn't get to meet everybody that you, you're plan to. I think we all can say that most likely.

SPEAKER 2: Also, I didn't feel like I saw every bit of the show. I, I think I saw the majority of it, but I, I felt like it was so big, dude. I, I know I missed something, you know, looking through other people's pictures. I'm like, I remember seeing that and that sort of thing. And so, you know, there's, that gives you an example.

SPEAKER 2: There are being there five days and you can't hit, it's so such an immense show, you can't hit and see everything. So if you were there one or two days, I, I just don't know how you decide what, what to do. I guess you just kind of pick what you want to do and, and just do the best you can in those couple of days. So, all right, let's, let's tackle this. Let's get this first interview.

SPEAKER 2: Going again. These are two short interviews, on the floor. This first one is from SGC, President Peter Steinberg SGC. He's a, a great sponsor of this program. We always talk to Peter at the show and, and this year was no different, although it was a little trickier to get it done with, with how busy they were.

SPEAKER 2: But, we got it done. All right. What's becoming sort of an annual tradition here on the National Show for? I always talk to my guy from SGC Peter Steinberg this year. You're back in action on site, grading after, after a little hiatus. Your thought so far is the, how's it going?

SPEAKER 5: It's going great, John. We're so happy to be back grading on site for the first time since 2019. I think we made the right decision not to grade on site in previous years due to the growth. The insane boom of the hobby led to such an influx of submissions really meant a lot to us to maintain turnaround times.

SPEAKER 5: However, at this point, we're built, we've matured as a brand. We're really, we're really proud of the fact that not only are we grading on site, but we're doing it at a very fair price and we're turning cars around very quickly.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah. As you know, I broke up with, with SCC, you sponsor the show. Thank you. The turnaround time is the fastest in the industry. There's no debate in that the proof in the pudding being with has as you're being here and, and doing on-site grading has that thrown a little bit of a or not necessarily.

SPEAKER 5: It definitely is a challenge. I mean, we have over 50 team members in Chicago and obviously located in South Florida. It's quite a trip. You know, we need certain employees driving the truck with all of our equipment, for example, and it's really a team effort.

SPEAKER 5: I mean, whether it's unloading the truck and setting the booth up, operating, you know, in and of itself or just kind of packing things up and exiting. It is definitely a pretty big undertaking, but I'm proud to say that with 50 amazing people that are all kind of working towards the same goal, it leads to good results.

SPEAKER 5: So we're having a great show and I'm also happy to say that although we have 50 or so employees at the booth here, we also have even more than that back at home doing an excellent job maintaining those turnaround times. I'm in contact with them constantly throughout the day.

SPEAKER 2: So I got to ask you, you don't have to name names. Is it a fight like who, who gets to go to the show or do you have some people who are like, hey, I rather rather stay local and, and how does that all work out?

SPEAKER 5: It's funny, I've actually never been asked that question.

SPEAKER 5: And you know what, it's actually a really challenging thing for me because there are so many extraordinary people that we choose for that reason to come to the National. But then there are also equally extraordinary team members that we choose to keep home because the bottom line is we can't put all our eggs in either of those baskets. We have to really set things kind of proportion.

SPEAKER 5: So we have the grading talent we need here, but also the grading talent we need at home and vice versa for really all departments of SGC. So the thing that we try to make clear is that whether you are chosen to go or whether you're chosen not to go. It by no means represents kind of the body of work you put together. It's really just a tough, really tough decision.

SPEAKER 5: But what I feel really good about is I think our entire team, the culture is amazing and I think the people at home take pride in the fact that they're kind of holding down the fort.

SPEAKER 5: And, you know, when, when we exit for the National, we kind of go to a nice little, almost like high five line, like the soldiers are leaving, you know, for war, basically representing the team at home. So it's, it, it really is a team, mentality throughout and the staff is just incredible.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah. Do you, what's been the reception with, with an grading back? Have people kind of been waiting for it? Is it, like, you know, we missed you sort of that sort of, feeling.

SPEAKER 5: That's exactly how it's been. This National has been my favorite in quite some time for that reason. It's just so good to finally give everyone what they want. Do it at $35 a card. I mean, that's as good as it's going to get and we're really proud of that fact.

SPEAKER 5: You know, we could have come in at the end of the day. Price point is our choice. And we had a big meeting on that and that meeting lasted quite a few hours actually where we wanted to be, you know, relative to some of the other great companies.

SPEAKER 5: And we decided, man, like we'd rather be working our butts off to keep up and you know, be trying to justify these sky high fees and nickel and diamond things like that. So I think we made the right choice and.

SPEAKER 2: Based on what you said with the reception, it appears, it appears that way as well for those that don't know, you collect cards as well, 200,000 square more square footage up to 600 K. Have you got much kind of a two prong question? Have you got to see sort of the expansion of the show and, and have you got a chance to buy anything for the Peter Steinberg collection.

SPEAKER 5: The famous Peter Steinberg collection? I haven't had a ton.

SPEAKER 5: There you go.

SPEAKER 5: There you go. I think I haven't had a ton of time to walk around, but I will say this in the, in the walk from kind of our on site drop off booth to the back room where we're actually processing these cards every single time, whether I'm going to or from, there's constantly a card, you know, catching my eye that I'll kind of do a double take it or take a quick look at.

SPEAKER 5: We'll see, maybe on Sunday I'll be able to make a few quick deals on the way out, but either way it's just so good to see. I mean, SGC is now everywhere on the show floor and it was not always like that. So it's extremely rewarding, not only for me personally but for so many members of our staff, you know, this is their first National.

SPEAKER 5: Many of and I try to explain to them that it wasn't always like this, you know, SGC wasn't in every display case, even as early as only a few years ago. So we take a lot of pride in it. It's, it's really special to see the faces that we serve on a daily basis, really back at home.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, we've talked before, you know, SGC always, you know, years ago you're not obviously a new company, sort of, you know, everyone sort of peg kind of pigeon your hoe as a vintage, Grady recovery. I think that's, that temperature has, has changed. I think that's a little bit even sort of what you're alluding to there.

SPEAKER 2: My personally, I have vintage and modern day cards and tuxedos. I think that sentiment has changed across, across the board. Would you, would you agree with that?

SPEAKER 5: I definitely would and I, I appreciate that. I mean, it's funny even in the grading room, there have been so many 52 mantles coming in for, for raw car grading for reordering, for reviewing and I'd literally say an equal amount of huge lebron, you know, patch autos. We've seen some really kind of flashy, you know, Jordan on card autos and things like that.

SPEAKER 5: We, we did an awesome stuff, Curry RP A earlier today. So it's, it's so good to see. I mean, it's apparent at this point. It's not, it's not a, you know, we're not guessing here by saying we think we're growing in modern. It's right in front of us. It's everywhere, which is really special.

SPEAKER 2: Yep. You've recently did, you know, some co-ops with fanatics slash tops and done some specials. Do you anticipate that relationship continuing for the foreseen future and maybe even years, years beyond the current times?

SPEAKER 5: Yeah, I think we do and I could say just personally, I really hope so. I mean, it's been great, you know, working with the team over at tops. What I think is really nice is that tops is not really too shy about their goals.

SPEAKER 5: It's to blow up the hobby, creating more collectors creating, I guess just more people who appreciate what guys like you and I have appreciated for so long and with that comes, you know, naturally higher prices for our cards and that doesn't stink.

SPEAKER 5: And, and I just remember growing up as a kid and I'm a fairly young guy. So it wasn't that long ago, but even back then, there just weren't as many people that really gave, gave a hoot about the cards that I love so much.

SPEAKER 5: And today, I mean, between Instagram and you know, whether it's YouTube grading reveals or just, you know, collectors podcasting, obviously, it's just so cool the way the community is being built and we're touching more and more people and showing them the love of Sports cards.

SPEAKER 5: So, yeah, I think to circle back around the team at tops has been a pleasure to work with. And obviously, I hope, I hope they succeed in their goal of really the space.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, they got as they, you know, Michael Rubin said big plans, we'll see how those work out without giving out all the secret sauce. How, how of of negotiations were that when you were, you know, working with taps? Is it, was it pretty much a smooth type of agreement or, you know, without giving you what you can talk about anyway? It was incredible.

SPEAKER 5: I mean, the word negotiation is not even appropriate. It was just, I didn't even want to say agreement. It was like, let's just help the hobby by creating, you know, lower barriers to entry for grading. Meaning there are so many new collectors that had never tried grading before. And with the insanely low grading fee of $9 a card and getting your card back in five business days.

SPEAKER 5: It's like, why not give this a shot for the first time. So I think that our interests were really aligned there and then it was just about working together and the bottom line is, is, as I've said, you know, over and over, I'm, I'm very proud of my team and they have a great team as well. So it was a breeze.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah.

SPEAKER 2: And, and like you said, look forward to continuing that colab for in the future, you know, a 56 day event, but it's, it's more than that, that's, that's here. Like you said, the stuff that has to go on at home and then to, to arrange travel. How difficult is it after the show is over getting back to Boca sort of getting back into the normal sort of the normal swing of things.

SPEAKER 5: It's a transition like it is for every collector on the floor. I mean, there's not a single one that isn't absolutely drained by the time the show is over. There's no doubt about that. But, you know, obviously we give the team, they need the time they need to kind of recharge their batteries.

SPEAKER 5: So they come back to the office feeling just as great as before we left. And, you know, we, we truly love processing trading cards. It's a lot of fun and it's what we're passionate about. So it doesn't feel like a job most of the time and, yeah, I think we're excited to be here and by day five we might be excited to go home.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, I get that. I get that myself. Well, I know you're a busy guy. I appreciate you as always making some, some time for us at Sports Star Nation. As you know, you always can, you always have carte blanche to come on. Anything kind of closing thoughts, anything you want to share, maybe a sneak peek at what's coming or just sort of, you know, I'll let you have the last word here.

SPEAKER 5: Sure. Yeah. No, it's been a pleasure. Obviously, as always John and I love what you do over at Sports Card Nation. I think as far as announcements from SGC, they're coming very soon and I'm not talking months, I'm barely talking weeks.

SPEAKER 5: We have a lot of exciting things that we've been working on at SGC, whether what you hope is happening or not, there's never stagnation. It's always, we can't do this simply because we're doing so many other things and there's, there's bandwidth with our company like any company, but we are extremely aggressive.

SPEAKER 5: We remain ultra focused on growing our footprint in the space and providing more collectors with affordable, you know, accurate and timely grading. So overall, I want to thank everyone for their support, both at the show and at home and thank you for the time. It's been awesome.

SPEAKER 2: Thank you as well, Peter like I said, we'll keep our annual tradition going at this point.

SPEAKER 2: Well, as you're willing to do it, I Sports cards is your number one source for all your PS A and other grading submissions. Their elite status improves turnaround times. Heck, they even provide the card savers. Their chat rooms provide updates on all your submissions.

SPEAKER 2: All right, welcome back. Let's, you know, this next interview, as I said in the intro is with someone I also consider, a good friend of mine, similar trajectories, you know, used to be part of hobby hotline. I, I've gotten to know Mike very well over the years been on his program. He's been on this program, multiple times and, we missed him last year in Atlantic City.

SPEAKER 2: But, thankfully, Chicago is kind of his backyard National and, got to hang out a little bit and talk with him and, recorded a segment for his show, by me and we did sort of a home and away. So this is me interviewing him at the, at the National and kind of getting his thoughts on this event and maybe future nationals as well. It's always great talking with Mike and as most people know, very intelligent and very thoughtful.

SPEAKER 2: So, here is that interview and here we go. All right, we're here at the 43Rd National in Chicago, Illinois in this next gentleman. I'm gonna speak to his backyard and a as such, he, he's here this year. Good to see him. We, we missed them last year in, in Atlantic City. So it's good to always connect with Mr Mike Summer from Wax Back Hero. How, how are you doing, Mike?

SPEAKER 7: I'm doing great John. It's always good to, to connect. We've fortunately got a chance to hang out several different times here over the course of the week so far. And so it's, it's always good to get to see everybody here at the National shop for some cards.

SPEAKER 7: But, like, we were talking the other day getting a chance to see some people face to face that you really only get to see once a year, you know, you interact online but it's different and it's a little bit different when you get a chance to hang out and have a drink and have dinner or whatever it might be. And so, yeah, it's, it's, it's having, having a great time. It's good to see you as always.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, we're gonna do two dinners, but by the time we wrap this thing up. Oh, no, you're, you're not going to the, but, but, we've seen plenty of each other, you know, and, and, hopefully next year in Cleveland as well.

SPEAKER 2: Some of your thoughts here, you know, obviously you were at the last Chicago one, they added 200,000 square footage. I mean, some of your thoughts on observations comparing this this year's to the last time it was here. I tell you what.

SPEAKER 7: If they wouldn't have added this square footage? I don't know where all of these attended would be. I think it would be even more, bumper to bumper people or butt to butt people. I mean, it's, it seems like attendance has been strong every day that I've been on the floor so far and that square footage filled up quick with the extra.

SPEAKER 7: It seems like there's more dealers, there's more vendors, there's more corporate presence and from what I can tell there's, there's more attendees as well. It's been a lot of energy so far on the floor from, from my perspective anyway.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, no doubt. I know Wednesday was my first day here and it, it, it had a, a bigger than Wednesday type crowd, feel to it. And so, we're doing this on, on Friday. So it's gonna be interesting. I know you, you got things to attend to, but it'll be interesting to see what, the Saturday here looks like, which typically is the strongest attended, day. So, your thoughts there?

SPEAKER 7: Yeah, it's, it's something else. I had a couple local friends who drove up for the day today and this is their first National ever and the text that I got from them were, they both basically felt pretty overwhelmed already just walking in today.

SPEAKER 7: And so I can't imagine what things are gonna be like on Saturday because it seems like Saturday is a day where you have some first time attendees who think they're gonna be able to come into the show and see the whole thing in a day. There's a, there's a lot of folks who can't take time off work. Saturday is their first day. I think it's gonna be even, even busier.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, it might be, it might be scary for those of us that are, that are here.

SPEAKER 2: You know, when we were, obviously it's a card show and I know, you, mission completed, for you, you get the, you were 15 cards away from your 61 tops baseball set coming into the show, as you reported on your Social Media, I'm not breaking news but you did, you did complete that set.

SPEAKER 7: Yeah, that was my main object for the show is I wanted to, to knock out the final 15 cards I needed for my 61 top set. I, my approach is usually I start with some of the comments and kind of try to build a pretty big starter set to go with and save some of the bigger hitters for last. I know that's a little bit opposite of what some people do, but that's the way I approached it.

SPEAKER 7: So I needed a couple mantel, a couple errands, a maze and several high numbers or, or some of the ones that I needed to get. And I, I came in with a mission. I didn't done my research prior to the show. Get a feel for what comps should be, what kind of prices I should be looking for and was able to get that knocked out between three or four, different dealers on that first day.

SPEAKER 7: You know, people always wonder what the pricing is gonna be like. At least for those 60 ones that I was looking for. I thought things were priced very competitive.

SPEAKER 7: There were some of those cards that I paid under what I was seeing on ebay prior to coming to the show and there were a handful that I paid over, but probably not by more than maybe 10%. You know, there were a couple of those cards that were 40 $50 cards and I might have paid 45 to $55 or something in that range. So I, I was very pleased with how competitive pricing was. At least for those 60 ones that I was looking for.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah, you have your store, your weekend store. I do my shows and, and you know, if you're, if you're selling cards right, you, you wanna be competitively priced, I mean, otherwise you're standing there and, and, you know, doing nothing. So I think, you know, we've had that settling down now for a little, longer extended time.

SPEAKER 2: I think dealers are realizing, you know, that if you're here to, to, to move cards and, and provide, you know, cards for, for collectors. So I think that's the, the reality sort of setting in on where the market market is. I know there are deals out there as you know, Mike. You just, you might have to look around a little bit and that's typically my strategy.

SPEAKER 2: I'm not, I, you don't come in buying right away last year. I waited till the last day. I almost was nervous. I was gonna leave without really buying anything of significance this year. I bought some this morning. So, I, I'm off the, I'm, I'm compared to, to last year. So, what's the next, I guess? What's the next, set project for you?

SPEAKER 7: It's, I haven't decided yet as part of that collection that I had purchased where I got the starter set for the 1960 the 1961 there was also a bunch of 1959 s that were in there. And so I've got a pretty good starter set on that one that is in flight.

SPEAKER 7: And the, the next one in my normal progression would have been 66 as I was working my way back. So it's either gonna be 59 or 66. I, I still need to figure out which of those it's gonna be, I'll probably give it a few weeks, maybe a month before I really start to, to come up with a plan for putting that one together.

SPEAKER 7: Knocking out two of these vintage sets in one year is a, that was an aggressive goal for me going to start here. And so I don't necessarily pressure to step right in and, and really hit one of these hard. I may, I may take a step, a step back.

SPEAKER 7: Gretzky Rookie is another one that had been on my want list and so I may put the, the set building goal on pause and maybe focus in a little bit about finding one of these grays that might be the next goal that I shoot for by the end of the year.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah. And I've seen plenty of them here. I, I know you're not thinking the necessary, this show but, they usually, they're, they're not short printed necessarily. But, you know, I think you'll be able to, pull that one off as well. We got the, the National taking place, the next one after this one will be in, in Cleveland, two prong question.

SPEAKER 2: And, you know, were you like Cleveland, is that doable from where you are? And they, they have yet to announce the vote, decision between Atlantic City, Atlanta and coming back here. I know where your vote if you had one, would, would lie.

SPEAKER 2: But, what we see in Cleveland and, other than, you know, I, I know he'd wanted in Chicago your thoughts on that sort of vote and, and now there's a rumor Atlantic City has offered each dealer 1000 bucks, each to vote, in, in their way which, it's almost like real politics. So, but your thoughts there?

SPEAKER 7: Yeah, I, I think, tentatively I would say yes for Cleveland, that is definitely doable from, being able to get there, being able to, to, you know, get there reasonably. It's gonna come down to, family first, type of situation.

SPEAKER 7: And so one of the things that we typically do is, you know, our family vacation in the summer and they're depending on what those plans are for for next year will depend on whether or not I'm able to, to make it to, to Cleveland as far as Atlantic City. You know, I, I have, you know, I mean, I have not been to one of the Atlantic City shows.

SPEAKER 7: I don't really have a desire to make it all the way out to Atlantic City from here in the Midwest. It's, it's a challenge to get there.

SPEAKER 7: And, you know, require some, even, even additional days off work and things like that to be able to get there and, and make it a go. I didn't hear a lot of good things about Atlantic City last year outside of the Convention Center itself.

SPEAKER 7: The people had good things to say about the Convention Center itself. Didn't hear a lot of good things. Other than that. And so would I prefer it be back here or in another destination? You know, that, that might be feasible. Probably.

SPEAKER 7: I probably would not be attending a, an Atlantic City, National, but the National Committee, they're not making their decisions based on whether or not Mike Summer is gonna be there or not.

SPEAKER 2: So, yeah.

SPEAKER 2: So either of us even on the right.

SPEAKER 7: So, I don't know that that, that makes much of a difference in the, in the grand scheme of things. But, yeah, II, I would vote for someplace else.

SPEAKER 2: Yeah. You know, I'm biased because I, I live close but I like to even see Atlanta get it. Just some place kind of different to get more south.

SPEAKER 2: You know, I will try to get to no matter where it is. But, obviously the closer for me, the better, the better and, and obviously Chicago. So maybe, maybe the Chicago here will, buck up and also offer $1000 to each dealer. So we could be back here in a couple of years.

SPEAKER 7: I don't know what the logistics are and, and what the feasibility is for a, for an event like this. But I'll throw, Saint Louis out there is another, consideration and again, selfishly, that's only about, three hours in the opposite direction for me. I'm kind of right in the middle between Chicago and Saint Louis. So that would be another one that, that could be both a new city, but also be nice and close for me.

SPEAKER 2: And I've never been to Saint Louis. So, I'd vote for, for Saint Louis too. It's a great, great Sports town and I'm, I'm sure a hobby hot bed, as well as far as collectors go. So, Mike, I know you're busy. I appreciate you, making some time and, we'll, we'll speak again, obviously.

SPEAKER 7: Yeah. Thanks for, thanks for inviting me on to, to chat a little bit to catch up. You know, it's, it's always fun to have these conversations.
