www.gc.com hi I'm Danny BL and I'm John Newman welcome to card menes hello and
1:32
welcome to episode 49 of card Menches also known as welcome to episode 49 of card Menches where I just duplicate
1:40
everything uh what's up Reuben thank you for uh staying up late tonight we have a
1:47
uh special 10 pm Eastern Edition I uh I'll admit I had some family uh family
1:54
obligations that I couldn't miss but uh I was happy to make those and happy to
2:00
be here tonight what's going on my friend if you were in the Italian mob your name would be Danny two times I
2:06
think it would be Danny Tu chins but you know yeah we're doing some late night I feel like we should have like we should
2:13
be on NBC replacing like Jimmy Fallon or one of those guys uh but uh no hey
2:19
better late than never we might have a little bit lighter crowd just because of the time so you know we can catch us
2:25
after the fact as always on audio and uh no I wish was I'm not even watching
2:31
sports I I spent some time with my family tonight Danny because the next two days I'm going to be home very
2:37
little with two card shows so I had to I had to check in uh tonight and I like
2:43
you said you had some family stuff so here we are though episode 49 almost almost a big five uh episode we gotta
2:50
come up with something for uh for the next one if anybody has any ideas what we should do for 50 let us know yeah and
2:58
uh you know and and so today's you know again this is one you came up with but it's it's timely and relevant right
3:06
postseason uh Legends I like to say right you know the collectibility of
3:11
them and we're going to talk about some guys that definitely are collectible and now we're going to talk about some other
3:16
postseason Legends maybe not so much you kind of there you know I guess they if this was music they'd be the one hit
3:24
wonders right we know we know that song we know that moment but we're not really
3:30
fans of the band like we'll buy the single but we won't buy the whole album
3:35
and that applies uh to the Hobby uh today and I'll let you you know expand
3:41
on that but that's how I kind of look at this topic well it's funny I look at it definitely like you do like there's
3:47
certain players who um their Legend their hobby love has been raised by
3:54
their postseason play there's other guys who even though they've had a moment in the postseason
4:00
um you know David freeze not to pick on him but his cards uh what do you see my
4:06
list do you see my list here no I just remembered his name after like three days I was so excited um but he his
4:14
cards aren't worth you know anything um and I think a lot of that will be
4:20
Regional um you know like in Baltimore we will remember Tito Landrum in the 83
4:26
playoffs so I think a lot of those one hit gonna be that I've probably never
4:31
heard of or haven't thought about him forever um although shout out to Ray Knight um and you know so we we'll we'll
4:39
see uh want to say hello to John look at that that's something new they put the
4:45
logo up there now on streamyard how about that I'm telling you look how fancy it
4:50
is um mooki wants to know did he miss no
4:55
but I'm wearing my Syracuse this is I don't know if you can see it it's a Syracuse metch uh shirt I'm wearing this
5:02
is the I live two miles from the uh Stadium NBT Bank Stadium going to
5:07
Syracuse Mets uh play I'm a media member so I get to go to all the games I want
5:13
for free and uh some of those Syracuse Mets are now on the postseason roster of
5:19
the big boy club uh enjoying some postseason success so uh that's very
5:24
cool viento remember early in the year when you were talking about uh Louise and
5:32
now they yeah I like him I got to see him obviously a lot here solid ball
5:38
player and uh you know they're loaded they're loaded in the infield some guys are going to be exiting stage left I
5:44
think we're going to see I don't want to make this the Met show but I think we're gonna see Brett batty probably moved in
5:51
the off season and probably um uh Whata call it Jeff mcneel will probably be on
5:58
on the outs uh looking at in amongst other guys probably for some pitchers that they def definitely need
6:05
so yeah I tell you he's uh he's become quite a spark plug player and he had a
6:11
good year uh here in Syracuse and uh you know if you're Brett Bady the B the
6:16
writing's kind of on the wall you're seeing all these other guys kind of get called up um and and you're not he did
6:23
he didn't struggle when he got sent down like he played fairly well he had moments of struggle but like if you look
6:29
at his overall numbers they were they were they were good it's just I don't I think I'm going to give I'm going to
6:35
defend him a little bit in that everybody takes a different path to how long it takes them to adjust to the well
6:41
I like Brett batty I just think it's not going to happen in in with the Mets I think he's gonna go somewhere else where
6:47
that is uh I don't know where that winds up being but I think he he makes a big Club in a different city you know or
6:55
with a different team I mean he could be a Yan you um but uh you know uh we'll see but uh they're load you know we got
7:01
another guy who's who's hurt right now Ronnie Mauricio who I really like too y
7:07
jet Williams like their Farms I tell you what between the Orioles and Mets they got there's two heck of two heck of uh
7:14
Farms right there absolutely and I'm still not over the 69 World Series so we
7:20
you know next year we could be a World Series favorites Orioles and Mets who
7:26
knows I'd sign up for that i' listen Orlando are in the World Series I'll sign up I'll sign up for listen and
7:33
everyone's heard me on this show my other shows you know I'm a I'm a pessimistic Mets fan like I always think
7:39
the worst I always expects that's just a Mets fan yeah well
7:45
I always expect the worst and hope for the best and I'm I'm not gonna lie about it I'm not I'm I'm definitely not gonna
7:51
say I told you so because I didn't tell you so I didn't think they were going to get in the playoffs and I sure as heck
7:57
didn't think they were going to do any kind of damage and yet uh here we are you guaranteed me they would choke at
8:04
the end I would have bet my almost bet my house on it not quite uh but uh you
8:10
know pitching starting pitching stepped up some timely hitting you got probably the Envy if it wasn't for Otani you got
8:17
the MVP uh in Francisco Lindor who you know carried him in in uh this series
8:24
here this past series with the Phillies and that last game that was looking like
8:29
going the full distance and then one swing at the bat you know Edwin Diaz made it interesting as he always does at
8:37
the end I'm not a huge Edward's d i me and my son were watching a game and I'm like I almost wish they let Peterson
8:43
just finish this thing out and sure enough he walks the first two guys and I thought it was gonna be right so oh
8:49
Ruben's comment uh made me remember to wish everybody a happy yum Kipper a
8:55
happy New Year good y all those things should you celebrate if not I wish you
9:01
peace peace and happiness in the year upcoming uh for me so uh just spre
9:07
spread the a little love and a little Vibes and time to uh remember we're
9:12
we're all specs on this big planet here and just to love love one another and enjoy that we get to talk cards that
9:18
that's my piece for the night um so let's talk about uh why the Mets are not
9:23
going to win it well I mean well they're P I'm not listen I'm not sold on they're
9:29
starting pitching they they've had guys step up but how long can you do that right so we'll see listen I didn't think
9:36
they'd get this far and and here they are so I'll watch each game as that I can and uh and and hope for the best
9:44
right uh I hate to say it but regardless of what happens now they're sort of playing with house money Danny uh you
9:50
know I don't I don't think even even the most optimistic of Mets fans I don't think uh would you know had them going
9:57
to the World Series like realistically and yet they're one series away now so
10:03
we'll see right you got to win four games now not two or not three it goes
10:08
to four and uh you know what whoever they get right it's going to be um you
10:14
know it's going to be a tough out uh I think you know but anything can happen at this can I Orlando who I do have the
10:21
utmost respect for but I'm gonna disagree with this I think that's only G to be good for the new y for New York I
10:29
would be bored I'd rather see the Dodgers and the Yankees nothing personal
10:35
than the Mets and the Yankees I think that's the better World Series matchup well I want to see the Mets versus
10:41
anyone that's that's where I'm going fair enough um John needs a Grimace
10:47
costume well I just need to paint myself purple I think I got the right I think I
10:52
got the right figure I just got to the complexions got to be purple so uh I
10:57
know but you're an honorary r we appreciate you showing up every week uh
11:03
love loving mookie because did you see mook's comment yeah the grimus comment
11:08
uh is hysterical cter says anybody but the Dodgers interesting I go for I'll go
11:13
for that I'll go for that I figured you'd be anybody but the Braves and once they were gone you'd be happy yeah I
11:20
don't you know I root for the Mets I don't so much root against other teams necessarily there's there's obviously
11:26
teams I like more than others but with the still alive I just you know at this
11:31
point Beggars can't be choosers as the saying goes so we can't pick opponents anymore it's just how it falls so um you
11:39
know I hope they get back by the next opponent they're in the World Series I'll be pleasantly surprised and uh you
11:47
know you get to the World Series right I you know if you would have told me the Mets were making the World Series in
11:52
2024 obviously I would have signed up for that uh any it's eight days a week so you would you what I was on yeah I
12:00
would ask anyone who mentioned that what they were doing you know and um you know
12:06
probably I have some naron I could have administered so to bring him back down
12:11
to reality but uh you know here we are right uh maybe I just keep using reverse
12:17
psychology and say hey I don't see them winning and they just keep proving me wrong um let's get into the topic for
12:24
tonight um John uh tug mcgr says you gotta believe I I and I do I do to to
12:33
not as much as tug used to I'll just say that but you know what when they won the first uh round against the Brewers I
12:40
think I went on my social medias and used that tug mcra you know famous quote
12:46
and uh you know I'll continue to use it after they win though I think it's easier to to brag after you win a series
12:53
then before like I know the Mets too well to claim victory before it actually happen
12:59
like they could get swept here uh I don't predict that but that could happen so you've said that I think every series
13:06
all year when we've talked I'm gonna keep doing it because whatever it is I'm taking credit for this I'm wearing the
13:12
same underwear from the Brewer series um that was the April Brewer series by the
13:19
way yeah so so I'm using a lot of cologne and body spray and what up there
13:26
you go all right our topic tonight is postseason Heroes Legends their
13:33
collectibility what does the hobby think and I'm going to start off the bat with
13:38
I think there's like three categories of guy there's the ones whose careers were helped by it you know helped by what
13:45
they did in the postseason and I think their Legend might have been inflated a little bit maybe the hobby loves them a
13:51
little bit um and I'm GNA use as my example for that Derek G Derek G on my
13:57
list without a couple plays in the postseason is looked at as an above
14:03
average shortstop not a first ballot 100% or whatever he got Hall of Famer I
14:10
think that's because of the success he had in the postseason and I and I'll go back and I'll use my David freeze
14:17
example of somebody that had success but it was not enough to do anything to their collectibility but jeters I think
14:23
has been much more collectible um because of what he's done in the postseason I agree made my list but
14:29
here's the thing I'm I'm going knock off a bunch of guys right here you can say that about a lot of Yankees right I got
14:36
a lot of Yankees that Legends are bigger because of rings on their fingers or Pro
14:42
you know you could go from Lou Garrick Babe Ruth Mickey Mano Yogi Bearer Whitey
14:48
Ford Jeter Rivera right just that postseason probably forgetting somebody
14:55
um but all those guys because of all the the Rings right right their Legends are
15:00
bigger championship rings make Legends bigger Reggie Jackson you know they name
15:06
the month after well I agree with you but I'm gonna push back a little bit because Mickey Manel Joe de magio Yogi
15:13
Bara those guys their talent stood they could have played for the for the Expos
15:18
or the Marlins and it wouldn't have mattered uh they they they would yeah you're right Jeter was not that level of
15:26
player yeah and the postseason bumped him up I I agree I think Yogi barer too
15:32
I think Yogi barer is a great catcher but I think he's viewed even better than
15:37
he actually is because you know he has like he he couldn't put rings on one hand he need two hands to hold all the
15:45
and he had a good postseason career he had a great regular season career I think he's viewed higher than his he
15:52
actually is you know what I mean like and again he's a Hall of Famer I'm not saying he's not a Hall of Famer I'm just
15:58
saying he's revered even more because of all those rings and postseasons the the
16:05
strikeouts were so were such a big deal when he played about how much he struck out without having that kind of that
16:12
postseason magic in his b back pocket to remind people what he can do I think the
16:17
strikeouts would have been a bigger deal in his career and now you don't talk about now we don't talk about strikeouts
16:23
at all uh Don Larson mookie says lived off his perfect uh game uh uh for 50
16:30
years yeah no doubt about it Don larsson's somebody who's perfect game in the World Series I think has elevated
16:37
them in the hobby I I I think you know maybe not a lot they're not one of the
16:42
great Yankees of all time you know but Larson definitely I think has been
16:47
helped by the perfect game what do you think oh yeah I mean he's not a Hall of Famer but I think he's talked about on
16:53
on on that that one nine inning performance right and uh from R Ruben I
17:00
want to get to because he's on my list right uh the 91 World Series You Know
17:05
Jack Morris is a Hall of Famer but it's a great Point here by Ruben did that series get him in and and it's hard not
17:13
to say it's hard to say no he pitched on three days rest in game seven just for
17:18
those that don't know whether you like Jack Morris or you don't it pitched on three days rest in game seven and not
17:26
only pitched on three days rest in game seven went 10 innings in a z00 game before they eventually won one nothing
17:33
and pitched the whole game himself and that's just like Paul bunan stuff if you
17:39
ask me and yeah I think I'll be honest with you I think that definitely got him
17:46
a few more votes uh to get through the doors of of Cooperstown and whether you
17:52
think Jack mois should or shouldn't be in I don't care who what side did that how you fall that that is one of the the
17:58
Great greatest alltime pitching performance in World Series and I watched that game and like he kept
18:04
coming out EV every inning and as a former High School pitcher actually in
18:09
91 I had just kind of pitched my last year in high school and this guy keeps
18:15
coming out and I'm like how many innings are they G on three days rest how many his arm is gonna fall off and you know
18:22
guys usually are not that effective on three days rest and you get five or six Innings if you're lucky he went 10 of
18:29
shut out ball was striking out people and literally said I'm not giving up any runs we just need one run get it soon
18:36
please uh they got it in the 10th they got it in the 10th inning and probably
18:42
one of the greatest that I seen live I wasn't in the stadium but watching and
18:47
just as a 19yearold kid High School pitcher just was in awe of how and you
18:53
know he wasn't a young guy anymore at that point he was yeah I mean he was on
18:59
the back nine of his career and um you know same thing with with Kirby Pucket
19:04
in that series that that that's an alltime uh series uh you know right
19:10
there with with with the twins and uh you know so yeah it's crazy stuff and
19:16
and and there's a lot of guys on this list you know I
19:21
Orlando Orlando agreed with you on the yogi Bea that he's got 10 rings and he
19:27
managed the pitchers he he himself though was not the best catcher or best player no and we can put a few catchers
19:34
ahead of him right and again not that be is a slouch um but uh he's not when we
19:40
talk about best catchers of all time he's not he's not usually mentioned right so uh but when we talk about the
19:47
Rings that's what gets him in the conversation right it's the Bill Russell conversation yeah and I I get it and uh
19:55
you know and Jack Morris I I actually think he should be the hall but there are some people that that would you say
20:02
that if there wasn't for that World Series game Welly that's a great question it would be it would be harder
20:08
for me to say yes let me let me I know that's a kind of a copout answer but I think that that performance that laid in
20:15
his career on three days I mean that's that's like Disney script stuff dude
20:21
yeah you know that's that's that's why I'm asking that's that's our topic tonight yeah sure that adds to the
20:26
legend right that adds to the that get you that get you in I'm sure
20:31
that got him excuse me more votes so and there's a few guys you know real quick I
20:37
want to clean up the Mets Hall of Fame here mooki says yog be it's a great Mets Hall of Famer uh Ruben says so so is
20:45
Warren span Ricky Henderson and Richie Ashburn we're we're we're doing the uh
20:51
all end of their career with the Mets uh yeah we might as well throw Willie Mays
20:57
in there uh oh yeah Willie yeah great Mets Hall of Famer uh Ruben does talk
21:03
about Jack Morrison says five times uh he finish in the top five in Sai Young award voting during his career yeah he
21:10
was a he was an Excell very good he's he's in he's in the small room of the Hall of very good
21:17
and during his error man he was a big game pitcher he you know when you know that question that gets ass you have to
21:23
win one game of act and of whatever year you're in uh you know who do you want on
21:30
the mound his his name was mentioned a lot when that question was asked and that's probably one of the biggest
21:35
compliments you can get when you're pitcher when your name's mentioned like we need one game to win who do you want
21:42
on the mound and a lot of times that answer was Jack Morris well I I'll throw
21:47
back a couple guys on my list who I think their postseason reputation adds to their Legend and I know you're a fan
21:54
of both these guys Bob Gibson and Sandy Kofa if they can I give out some stats
22:01
please go for it so Kofa he won two World Series MVPs had a career erra in
22:08
the world series of 0.95 with a 42% strikeout rate meaning
22:15
ridiculous 42 42% of the batters that got in the Box during the World Series
22:20
play went back to have a seat on the bench without putting the ball in play not quite 50% but pretty darn close
22:29
4.2 out of every 10 batters couldn't put a ball in in that's more than one an
22:34
inning and Gibson Gibson where let me find it because he he was seven and two
22:40
lifetime in the World Series 1.89 erra 0.89 whip in an 81 Innings pitched he he
22:50
had 92k he won two World Series MVPs himself 1964 in
22:56
1967 and again they were the answers to many of play you know like who do you
23:02
want on the mound during that error uh when you need one game to win win a
23:07
title and Gibson and kofax were the answer for that and so that added to their Legend especially when you look at
23:14
kofax whose career was shorter uh you know he needed those kind of stats and
23:20
and you know just legendary performances to to add to his uh his resume you know
23:26
we'll talk about let's talk about some pitching performances and then I I'll mention a couple guys and be quiet
23:32
Madison bombarder in 2014 uh you know pitch 52.2 innings in
23:39
the postseason did that hurt the rest of his career yeah and I think he he got a
23:44
paycheck a nice paycheck for that but yeah I think that hurt his arm yeah and he's not a Hall of Famer but he went 4-
23:51
one with a 1.03 eay he made his name uh in 2014 with that post season run
24:00
including the title you know another guy or Hershiser right not a Hall of
24:06
Famer yeah yeah three in the same year that he had the 59 consecutive scoreless
24:11
inning streak now this is the same year 1988 if that wasn't good enough he he
24:17
won the World Series went three and0 with a 1.06 uh erra in the World Series so it
24:23
wasn't like he you know he he start letting runs up in the World Series he Z
24:28
was 1.06 uh in 1988 postseason so just
24:33
probably 88 or Hershiser 1988 season is probably one of the best pitching
24:39
seasons ever now he's not a Hall of Famer but it's one of the legendary pitching seasons ever thrown out from
24:46
the mound by I I think people confuse the fact that just because you're not in the Hall of Fame doesn't mean you
24:52
weren't great in part of your career and and and you know a Hall of
24:57
Fame is an overall career but guys have great years over and over where they
25:02
play at a Hall of Fame level maybe for a year um it's just not their whole career
25:08
I want to throw out another name from that 88 series I think Kurt Gibson will be signing autographs for the rest of
25:15
his life for that home run yeah again that was and I watched that live as it
25:21
happened you know in front of my TV set right and you know the the the call
25:27
itself with with book you know and the dude's hobbling up to the plate he weren
25:33
even he wasn't even supposed to play you got one of the best relievers in the game at the time and Dennis Eckersley
25:39
who was making everyone else look s silly it was such a a mismatch on paper
25:45
everyone in the stands thought so people at home thought so Dennis Eckersley
25:50
thought so maybe in the back of even Kirk Gibson's mind he thought so I don't
25:56
know but we all remember what happened and it was like the natural if you ever
26:01
seen the movie The Natural I it just it had that feeling the only thing missing was that ball hitting like a light a
26:08
light stand in the Outfield and and all the Sparks uh flying down um but just uh
26:14
like that's a Disney movie but it wasn't a Disney it was real life and but who's
26:19
Kurt Gibson without that moment yeah he's not Kirk Gibson he's not he's not
26:25
yeah he's not that that is that made Kirk Gibson Finn scully's call was fantastic yeah yeah y yeah so that's
26:33
what we're talking about so guys guys in the postseason that have kicked it up a notch you know talking about we talked
26:39
about Jack Morris did that that performance get him in the hall how about Bill mazeroski in 1960s with the
26:45
Pirates and the walk off that's a great because he was known a defensive player
26:51
yeah a lot of people don't think he's a Hall of Famer but he beat the Yankees with with that walkoff and made himself
26:58
a postseason Legend you know when whenever there's a big postseason home
27:03
run his name tends to get mentioned again you know if that wasn't the case he he's not gonna be mentioned that much
27:10
anymore well by the same thing would anybody ever know Bobby Thompson's name
27:15
Bobby Thompson if he doesn't go off of Ralph branet you know
27:20
yeah and Giants were independent the Giants that's the other thing we know
27:25
calls from some of these moments too you know oh this is a great one orando would
27:32
Joe Carter be Joe Carter no I will say this though he had a great 1993 he's he
27:39
I it was a great moment he's still a great he's still a very very very very good player even without that moment but
27:46
how often would you ever talk about Joe Carter if it wasn't for that moment yeah I yeah I agree with you I agree with you
27:53
and that's you know a guy that's another guy when we talk about postseason home run right that's that probably maybe
28:00
number one on the list with Kirk Gibson and mazeroski right um you know Bobby
28:06
Thompson which wasn't a World Series um but uh you know so well yeah those
28:13
wasn't it the playing game yeah to get to it you know but it was you know some of these others like mazeroski Carter um
28:21
Gibson those were World Series I just wanted to add a point on Gibson here uh mooki says that uh he humed in the 84
28:28
series too KT Gibson was an amazing athlete he played football at Michigan State yeah he could have played in the
28:35
NFL yeah I'm not criticizing who he was as a player I'm just saying that moment
28:41
in the 88 World Series took his career and made it memorable for a lifetime not
28:47
not just you know for a couple years um this is another good one remember aie
28:53
Smith yeah the last person you ever think would hit a home run yeah choked up choked up on the bat and that ball
28:59
just kept going you know he's running around the bases he's not even expecting a home run he thinks that thing's Off
29:05
the Wall he chug he didn't have a home run Trot he never you know yeah he was
29:11
chugging thinking like I'm gonna get as much out of this ball off the wall as I can and the thing just kept going didn't
29:17
make it by much right yeah there's a blast from the past right let's even go
29:23
back further you know obviously we no one none of us watching uh were around the but you know Christie matthewson had
29:30
11 complete games in the world series um and an 0.97 uh career World Series ER right
29:39
just a just a amazing stat you know we don't in today's day and age we don't
29:44
even see complete games anymore he threw he threw 11 uh and that's just uh I know
29:50
sometimes we don't give enough love to that error so I wanted to throw him on the list Eddie Collins uh from the from
29:57
the white sock who was one of the guys not named uh during the Black Sox Scandal uh he was he was in six World
30:05
Series and had a career 400 average in World Series play including 1919 when he
30:12
wasn't part of that Scandal so you know Legends of the Fall Right that way to go
30:20
back in the way back machine um well I sometimes I think we I don't want to say forget maybe a little bit of forgetting
30:27
but I don't think enough love to that error of of ball so Orlando brings out
30:33
the flip side here John what happens when a guy who has a good career has a bad moment in the playoffs yeah well
30:40
Bill Buckner's you know Orlando points out probably the poster boy uh for that
30:45
right and you forget his whole career he had a a a very good career he wasn't
30:52
there's people I'm not one of them but there are some people who believe me had like a hall of f Hall of Fame worthy or
30:59
he's in in the discussion you know I I won't go that far but yeah that's uh you
31:06
know it's unfort I mean for the Mets as a Mets fan it got me off my couch uh at
31:12
14 years old and running around the living room like a a 14-year-old idiot
31:17
but you know even in my 14-year-old mind after like celebrating and then they
31:23
seen what eventually happened I re even at 14 I knew like for Buckner like
31:29
that's going to be tough like how do you go you know back to the home fan they're gonna want to kill you or or you know
31:37
burn you you know stick needles in you make a voodoo do like I felt bad for him
31:43
I felt bad for him yeah I felt bad for him because I knew the Wrath he would
31:49
face from one play from one Mis right you know this is the point people always
31:55
forget yep wild before the before the hit yeah and you know stuff had to
32:02
happen after that too the Mets had to get you know that wasn't the end of the game it wasn't like Buckner made the
32:09
error and he walked into the Dugout you know as as that was the game Ender it
32:14
kept the ending alive I I get it but more stuff had to happen which as a Mets fan thankfully it did and I you know
32:21
even like I said even at 14 I knew the gravity of the situation as you know I
32:27
was a player at 14 I he SP but I knew who made errors and felt terrible you
32:33
know I'm like he made it in the biggest stage with all the lights and everyone watching and that's got to be tough like
32:39
how do you you know how do you recover from that he did I mean it the you know he made amends with Boston at the end
32:46
that that was nice but there was many years he was a pariah you know he was
32:51
the Steve Bartman uh for the Red Sox I'm GNA the Cs I'm gonna update here one out
32:58
away from the Dodgers clinching yeah you know I again just
33:05
clinched yeah the Padre's Padre's got shut out the last two games that's that's a tough way to they had a lot of
33:13
momentum real time I'm gonna hit you real time with this does sh Otani
33:18
actually have more growth in his hobby love if he does something in the in
33:24
October I think the 5050 season is is making this already epic like if if even
33:30
if the Mets beat the Dodgers here in in in the NL uh you know CS I think Otani
33:37
still looked at now if Otani and the Dodgers win a World Series that just adds to the lore maybe he's a Hall of
33:43
Famer to you know this season if that happens that's what I'm saying I mean that that you know that just that's
33:51
another layer he doesn't have yet and he's gotten he's going to be three out of four MVP and on any given day he
33:58
could be the best pitcher in the majors you take those things but there's no no
34:03
October success um and and that that just blows me away that there could
34:09
still be more growth on him yeah he's young I mean he's not old no he just
34:14
signed he just signed a double year double digit year deal with to Dodger this is the first year of that deal now
34:21
is he going to be the same player in year 10 of that contract I don't see it
34:26
um but they're going to get a lot of good years bar and injury and he hasn't even like you said he hasn't even
34:31
pitched yet for the Dodgers that you know and there's some people Danny that say you know what don't pitch just hit
34:38
you're already a legend with just a bat in your hand like don't even worry about pitching don't risk it but I think
34:45
pitching and and I think that adds to the lore well there it's so hard to find good pitching the Dodgers like every
34:52
other team Scramble for it and if you can put a guy on the mound who's a sa young caliber pit
34:58
and not have it affect what he does at the plate I mean how do you turn that down yeah and listen I love I I love
35:05
Francisco Lindor you know with a 5050 season your first year after a big
35:12
contract lots of pressure in a bigger Market uh with with the Dodgers over the
35:18
Angels listen I I you know I I said me and my son had this discussion any other
35:24
year Lindor easily but on a 5050 Otani year first year in La I think he's going
35:31
to win it unanimously and and deservedly so it's not like he's getting you know it's not it's not like he's lindor's
35:38
getting robbed that's a huge year so and to the point of our conversation yeah it will make a
35:45
difference yeah and and you know M's last comment here you know it makes a great point right the war we always have
35:51
this debate with Awards right can you win a saai young if your team doesn't
35:56
make the postseason season can you you know can you win the MVP if you're on a last place team you know it's the most
36:03
valuable player and I I don't think any Met fan mooki myself whoever else will
36:08
argue that Lindor was you know there was a Mets award for most valuable player he
36:14
he'd win the Mets award this year right I just think a 5050 year which has never
36:20
happened in all the years of Major League Baseball existing it's never been
36:25
done you know you really did carry that team yeah in spite of in spite of Dave
36:31
Roberts who to me is one of the worst managers in the in in the league he he's a manager that gets the least out of the
36:38
most like you know so so wait so Dave Roberts is known for a stolen base in
36:44
the World Series right yeah he's another yeah he's I I think he's overrated as a
36:49
manager you and everyone in the chat room could manage that lineup to a
36:55
postseason burth do you think his resume looks better because of that stolen base
37:00
do you think people look play resume his overall resume when people look talk about Dave Roberts does that stolen base
37:07
make a difference I don't think so I I think it does I think I think people will always know him for that yeah I I
37:15
know him as someone who gets the least like they lose games and I question some
37:21
of the games I watch some of his his decision making is questionable you know
37:27
that lineup is loaded dude you got Betts Freddy Freeman Otani uh uh you know T Oscar Hernandez
37:35
is very good like that team should have had a better year like than they did
37:41
like if they had what I would perceive as a better manager they would have been even better they're heavy at the top but
37:47
they're not deep uh Rober B The League Championship Series mooki we're talking
37:53
about the postseason not just the World Series yeah World Series though a few extra for yes but thank you thank you
37:59
for correcting me all kidding a said um so who David or David Ortiz is not David
38:05
Ortiz without the Red Sox postseason agree a th% I I think he's overrated in
38:11
general yeah I don't even know if he's really a Hall of Famer but I think his postseason got him in we talk about you
38:18
know postseasons getting the guy in the Hall of Fame uh I think David Ortiz and
38:24
now is's you know doing uh you know postgame analysis on on uh on TV I think
38:30
you know I think a lot of that's from his postseason Legend uh to be uh quite
38:36
I'm not saying he's a bad player I think he gets like you said I think he gets more credit than he's probably deserves
38:43
because of let me ask you a question who's better player Jim to or David Ortiz in my mind it's it's tomy's the
38:50
more consistent player right I think most people would say Ortiz because of the because of
38:55
the the the leg of the postseason stuff yeah that's my point so he made my list
39:02
you know Shilling Smoltz how about how about Kung I'm gonna disagree on Smoltz I
39:09
think Smoltz had a long consist no he's a Hall of Famer I'm not I'm not saying that but he became you know famous for
39:15
for you know postseason as both a starter and a closer and then you got
39:21
you know how about Pablo Sandoval from 2012 three home runs uh in one game
39:28
he had a hobby blip for for a year because of that Series yeah it came back
39:33
down to earth when he when he did but and I was a deal I was a dealer since 1987 I remember selling Pablo sandol
39:42
cards and almost feeling guilty like this guy is not going to be longterm like the you know I almost wanted to
39:48
tell people you sure you want to buy these Pabo sandals you know what I mean like probably not a good idea long term
39:55
you're just kind of catching the way but you know he when you think of Pablo
40:00
sandal you think of you know his body shape in that 2012 uh World Series right
40:07
in three home runs in one game right you mentioned them already David freeze Big
40:12
G big game player with one strike away from losing right him and Albert phol in
40:19
that series single-handedly uh won that for for St Louis and you know kudos to David freeze
40:25
they wanted to put him in there the Cardinals Hall of Fame and he he politely and respectfully declined he
40:32
just said he didn't have enough of a a a great career he had a great series but
40:37
he didn't think he was worthy of the Cardinal Hall of Fame and he declined it so that's pretty silly I I'll go in and
40:45
I didn't play um Ruben says Madison bumgardner definitely got shine in the hobby due to
40:52
the postseason yep and and and just was pitching again 50 two innings that
40:58
postseason right after pitching 217 he pitched
41:03
217 in the regular season so that's almost 300 Innings uh for B for bom
41:10
Gardner in in that year so you know that's just uh crazy got a big contract
41:16
yeah and uh lived happily ever after never really lived up to the contract in
41:22
my opinion uh but you got your Rick Dempsey uh was the next one on my list
41:29
yeah you know not World Series so much but you know Edgar Martinez in 1995
41:34
postseason you know over overshadowed even his own teammate in Ken Griffey Jr
41:41
and uh just uh you know and he made the hall was was it that 95 postseason
41:46
performance that maybe got him some you know he wasn't a unanimous you didn't get in unanimously so did that 95
41:54
postseason add to Edgar's uh Legacy especially being a DH right we talk
41:59
about our DH is worthy of getting in just because they don't play the field well you know edar Martinez you know
42:07
although he did he did play some Third Base early in his career but that 95
42:12
World 95 postseason I should say was like that made that made him edar
42:19
Martinez and I think there yeah because a lot of people look at griffy on that team but Edgar is
42:26
really the one that carried them uh especially on from the right side all year yep and you know we this goes to
42:33
other sports I know we're talking about baseball right you know I don't Tom Brady right with all the Rings I I
42:39
thought you know I I'll say this people might think I'm nuts pton Manning was a better quarterback you know um like
42:47
physically yeah Brady was got had better coaching staff and and was smart maybe a
42:54
little bit smarter in certain situations but you know I I I don't believe Tom Brady was a better quarterback than pton
43:01
Manning pton Manning has two rings too Brady has seven and that's you know that's that's the differ I'll use my own
43:08
guy as a Steeler fan you know I'm not even that much of a Terry Bradshaw fan like but you know he's got all the rings
43:16
that got him a lot of notoriety uh to this day it's the only thing he has is
43:21
the is the Super Bowls his numers suck yeah I was shocked and I was a young kid
43:28
watching them play and not as much into the the numbers and stats as sayy they were winning but when I really like
43:35
looked at his body of work career it was shocking you know Joe namoth Joe namoth
43:40
threw more interceptions than touchdowns and they call him Broadway Joe he's a legend right because he played in New
43:47
York guaranteeing a a Super Bowl victory as an underdog and then do delivering it
43:53
right against yeah yeah that one Super Bowl made Joe namoth Joe neth and so when you
44:01
think of Joe neth you think of two things right you think of that superbow and then you think later on it
44:08
is yeah so so and and people buy Joe nameus cards because of those I hate to
44:15
say it those those two movements a lot of times so we talk about the hobby
44:21
effect right you know Patrick Mahomes is GNA be that guy who has a lot of years
44:27
so yeah being a a league MVP one year I don't think turns your career around but
44:33
yeah so I mean it applies to other sports too right you know again going back to the David Tyrie helmet catch
44:40
from Eli Manning I have to mention him because he's from Syracuse University wait let me take a step back how about
44:47
Eli Manning if he doesn't win those Super Bowls both of them I think you look at him as a much more mediocre
44:54
quarterback yeah he's going to be in the Hall of Fame with his brother so and I
44:59
Marino Dan Marino was probably the best quarterback without a Super Bowl ring he
45:05
made it to the Super Bowl in his rookie year lost to the Redskins never made it
45:10
back which is crazy listen he he had some receivers but he never had huh lace
45:17
is out lace is out Ace ventur he never had like the elite receivers like
45:22
Clayton and duper were good but they were no Jerry Rice right had no running
45:28
defense yeah and Mar is a legend uh a lot of more because of the the Rings
45:35
himself so postseason can make the legend bigger I'm not saying it's the
45:40
only thing you can be a Hall of Famer without a ring as a Marino is but you
45:47
know uh you know it's it's you know it can make uh you and listen even David
45:53
freeze we talked about David freees that one year he just caught lightning in the bottom I you know again doing shows in
46:00
back then I sold a lot of David Free's rookies right thinking to myself like
46:06
like people realizing like this he had a great World Series but long term he's not a Hol you know um so so Big Ben you
46:15
know Big Ben's a better quarterback than Terry Bradshaw like even though he has three less Rings
46:22
unfortunately yeah so this is not just a relegated to baseball this crosses all
46:30
all the we just focusing heavily obviously on baseball well it's baseball
46:35
playoff time also um yeah so there there was h two less Rings yeah that's what
46:43
Rings get you right they get you more Street Credit as they say um what was I
46:49
just gonna say um but I think baseball is more reactionary football favors
46:56
quarterback so much yeah it's almost hard to move the needle if you're not a
47:01
quarterback quarterbacks can can go go to the Moon people overreact so much
47:07
yeah I agree I think receivers are probably next and and running backs have become sort of an afterthought it's just
47:14
running backs have become I think you know when we look at the NFL not to make this an NFL show well we're seeing
47:21
running backs are not getting taken early no more and it's just going to be you know a two or three man running
47:27
backs are almost like a pitching rotation now you're going to see just two or three guys come in for series and
47:34
carry the ball and fresh legs and when you do that when you use a two to three running back uh system no one stands out
47:42
right it's just the running game becomes the running game rather than a player uh
47:47
you know their running game was successful not you know Kenneth Walker or Derk Henry had a big game and I think
47:55
you're seeing in Baltimore where everybody can yeah no and there's a few guys that are still the guys right CMC
48:04
Derrick Henry Jonathan Taylor with the Colts uh you know kenon Walker still in
48:09
Seattle um but I think a lot of these other teams you they use just a two or three man uh rotation you know and I
48:16
think that's the way the NFL's going you know if I'm a kid that loves football you know used to be years ago
48:24
be like I want to be the running back give me the ball want to carry it 30 times a day a game right now kids are
48:31
probably not going to want to play running back anymore going to be just you know all quarterback receiver or
48:36
make their bones on the defensive side of the ball but running backs is is went
48:41
from a sexy position to like no one's going to want to do it if especially you
48:47
know if you want to shine in the spotlight you're going to be sharing it with a whole room of of running backs so
48:53
or three or four of them so speaking of sexy I I remember remember what I wanted to say uh Lamar Jackson I think is one
49:01
of the guys who who is suffering from not winning a title yeah he is and and
49:07
Son but I think there's guys like that in baseball also yeah my son who is a big Steeler fan like myself will tell
49:14
you like Lamar Jackson might be the best quarterback in the NFL but like you just
49:20
said Danny that postseason you know lack of Hardware is is is hurting him and
49:27
probably not fairly so it's not like he's having terrible games yeah like
49:32
they're not winning but this I I don't think he's like choking like we've seen
49:38
other players kind of do just whatever reason they they run into somebody and that gets them and you know you know
49:46
Barn injury is gonna be a Hall of Famer but sort of like Marino right that lack of postseason success you know maybe we
49:54
have maybe that'll be the conversation like the best quarterback never to win a Super Bowl ring Lamar Jackson Dan Marino
50:01
all right real quick before we get out of here uh this is a great name from the past you want to read this one yeah
50:08
David David Xin uh yeah he made you know he get a Little mench Love in there for
50:14
for David Xin too yeah I forgot I'm not gonna lie I forgot about him I forgot
50:20
about I remember now you know with with with Ruben mentioned him I remember that
50:25
but I for when I was putting my list together I I missed them uh Joe flacko
50:31
is is Elite by the way uh he sold his soul how he's playing at the level he is
50:37
at his age is insane because he doesn't care he just stands in there and he's got an arm from the gods and just just
50:46
stand there take the hits and throw yeah he I was shocked I was shocked he did it
50:51
last year too in Cleveland he won a Super Bowl for the Ravens in 1973
50:56
that's how long he's been how crazy is it think about the Browns right they
51:02
they back up the Brinks truck and trade they mortgage their future for desun Watson which might be the dumbest move
51:09
ever and I am including the Hershel Walker trade yeah and they get rid of Baker Mayfield who's having a second
51:16
coming in Tampa Bay they cut that Joe flacko filled in for an injured deshun
51:22
Watson uh deshun Watson Admiral Admiral one games got him into the postseason
51:29
then they part ways with with Flaco he goes to Indianapolis and wins games
51:34
there and you got Watson who looks like a shell of him for former South like Baker Mayfield and Joe Flaco are better
51:41
quarterbacks than DeShaun Watson and they're locked into a long-term big money deal that they really can't get
51:49
out of and No One's Gonna touch Deshawn Watson with a 10- foot pole uh right and
51:55
that's that's literal and figurative yeah and like what do you do like you
52:01
almost like you almost got to cut them and eat the contract and that's gonna suck but like what do you do they can't
52:09
it's too much on the books they and they screwed the Poo for all the other teams that had to overpay quarterbacks after
52:15
that they reset the market yeah it's it's I agree I think when all said and
52:21
done it's going to be the worst looked at is the maybe not even in football history just in sports history it might
52:28
be a sports history worst trade ever yeah you you usually don't go out and
52:34
make somebody the highest paid player ever right in the middle of a uh that's the thing they had reports like it was
52:42
they they there was that was stuff was ongo it's not that the Browns didn't know anything about it right they just
52:49
rolled the dice and hoped it would blow over where it was all being blown out of proportion and I think you know it's all
52:56
allegedly so speak but no he settled 44 of the cases yeah so you know so and
53:04
what do you do her owner Jimmy Haslam is an idiot I mean he just I will say this
53:10
I'm glad they're in our division as us a ravens yes you you and I each get
53:15
another Buy on the schedule yeah although although the Steelers have a knack for playing down to their level
53:22
and G ging one of those gam at least one of those game seems like every year away
53:28
so all right I want to give one more name on our original topic before we get out of here okay because I think this is
53:37
I already put that up there that was funny well I didn't so I'm doing it um
53:43
well mooki who Among Us hasn't settled 44 cases a beer maybe a beer Ruben you're
53:51
banned you're banned Ruben um Carl your krimsky what he did
53:58
to lead the Red Sox what was it 67 down 67 67 was a triple Triple Crown
54:07
was that the year that he that he destroyed September you know I should I
54:12
know I now I'm I may be the wrong guy to ask because I was a New York City kid who
54:19
loved C shreky some people may not realize that he's a Long Island Legend who you know wound up being drafted by
54:25
the red side and so Yankee fans had a hard time rooting against him because he was kind of one of their he's one of us
54:32
so to speak from new I just I just want to throw it out there that if somebody carries a team down the stretch and gets
54:40
them into the playoffs a lot of times that can have the same effect when when a guy puts a team on the back a pitcher
54:46
a hitter and and and and you know turns the season around I mean similar to what
54:52
ter scub uh you know did with Detroit I mean The Only Name on that team dude we
54:58
saw we saw that Detroit Cleveland game when we went to the National right and
55:03
what did I say to you man this this Detroit team is like a I'm watching a minor league team it's just that the
55:09
major like if you would have told me then that this team is going to be where
55:15
they are you know at this like I'd have thought you're nuts like no way like
55:21
what did all the like did 10 teams plane team planes crashed and they were like
55:27
like you know like I would have never I would have lost everything on that bet like they they that lineup was was seven
55:35
minor Leaguers a a washed up jav bz and and one guy that could hit a little bit
55:41
and obviously one of the best pitchers in baseball but you know he didn't pitch that night but um like that team had to
55:48
me had no business even sniffing postseason and yet you know here we are in 2024 like that one shot ER that would
55:57
you know whether you like him or not I guess you got to take our hats off the the AJ hinch you know I talk about Dave
56:03
Roberts getting the least out of the most AJ Hench is sort of the opposite he
56:09
gets the most out of the least amount of talent so Y and her Eiser did the same
56:14
thing down the stretch with the Dodgers yeah yeah we talked about that year was one arguably one of
56:21
the best ever by a pitcher yep was 8 Herer like just unhit almost unhitable
56:27
like it was like you didn't have to be a Dodger fan like when you when you when you knew he was pitching that night you
56:33
wanted to watch absolutely all right we're into overtime my friend anybody else on your list no I I covered them
56:41
all you know and again you know I think you have teams that have like an erors of like high postseason success like the
56:48
Yankee um like the Red Sox later in the 2000s and I think that builds Legends up
56:55
ortizes this the jeters uh obviously the Yankee teams of the past you know I'm
57:00
not saying those guys aren't Hall of Famers but that post season just ramps their resume even up further and um it
57:08
helps you know and in certain guys cases like we talk right Jack Morris Edgar
57:14
Martinez they have performances where hey that might that might have got him
57:19
in the hall or you can look at that and say they're in the hall because of that you know uh Pucket even in 91
57:27
was was tremendous and um so yeah I mean it's real it's real and I don't think
57:33
they don't the players don't have to apologize for it they're just doing what they're supposed supposed to try to be
57:38
doing so um and yes you can see Orlando tomorrow morning on hobby hotline on
57:44
bench clear media at 11:00 a.m. eastern I will be in the Metropolis of Fulton
57:50
New York a very small City at a Caro it's their first to my knowledge it's
57:55
the first card show in this town I'm not expecting anything uh too crazy but uh
58:02
you know I might have time to sit there watch The Hobby hotline from my table I hope that's not
58:08
the case I say I hope it does a little bit better than that yeah I'm going in with low expectations and maybe maybe
58:16
David freeze will show up and I'll have a that's what my wife said at our wedding um all right on that note say
58:24
good night John good night John [Music]
58:33
he
