Transcript

Good Friday evening. I almost said morning. Sometimes I lose track of my days. My name is John Newman, hosts a sports carnation.

I am doing Breaking Cardboard tonight. We're gonna try to do this every other Friday, much like we used to do with Menches. I like live stuff. I sort of semi retired.

I still do Hobby Hotline, but I wanted to bring this show back, which in it's old incarnation it was once a month. I want to try to do these twice a month. We always have a guest because me me by myself is no fun for you or for me, So we're gonna We're gonna have guests or guests. There'll be sometimes we have more than one person.

Tonight we have a gentleman who I really like, although this is the first time I've ever shared the screen with him. At the same time, he's a lot of times he's in the chat rooms, whether it's Hobby Hotline or matches or something else I'm doing. The one thing I love about this guy is he doesn't mince words. It's I try to be like that as much as possible.

Give you the straight scoop, even if you don't like what I'm gonna say or agree with what I'm gonna say, right, one of the biggest compliments I'll get is John, Hey, I don't agree with everything you say, but I appreciate that you speak from the heart and you care and you're passionate and YadA, YadA, YadA. So this guy kind of in bout in bodies and and I tend to gravitate to that. And so for the first time where we're gonna share the screen today, I'm glad to have him on. We're gonna open a couple packs along the way, not all at once, but we'll take a little quick breaks and open packs.

I'm gonna open two packs eighty seven. Don us see what we get. And you know, you know, if you've been in the hobby long time or even if you have it, eighty nine upper DAK, which you know is the number one card, right, Griffy. This is the low number.

So there's a better chance at the Griffy than if this was a high series pack. I've had these quite a while. I've got stash packs in this room all over the place. But enough talking.

Let me bring on my guest. For the first time, we're going to share the screen, mister Mike Petty, welcome. Hey what do you say there on your top? Goodness? See you my handsome friend. Well, listen, that was I just I just gave you a nice intro where I say, like, you speak the truth and then you call me handsome.

So you've proven me, You've proven me wrong, right right right off with you. I can't believe it. Yeah, well I don't know. Again, I don't know, but I listen.

I really appreciate the way you are, Mike, and you know you love the hobby, right, and that's what we're here. We share that that common threat. Let me get some hellos, kind of been to the job boss, looking forward to there's hey Mookie, Mookie's in the house. I'll try to get to as many of these as I can.

Am I three cards, logan, my fellow guy. You never know what you get when you click on those porn porn hubblings. Be careful there. Luckily you got us and not something else.

So Mike Petty nation, we get Adam. And so this is again real quick. This is a show I used to do probably a year and a half two years ago. I think I got up to like six episodes and that kind of menches, I'll kind of filled in.

Uh, Danny's you know, busy with sports illustrated collect so menches kind of be kind of difficult. Contrary to you know, contrary to popular belief, me and Danny are still friend. It's just we don't talk as much. And so if you gave a little difficult So I'm like, let's you know, I'm gonna relaunch this show.

And I'm like when I'm like, hey, who do I want to have on? You know, there you go. So the list of folks I'm gonna try to get tomorrow. But Mike was right at the top. Of the list.

And and and here we are, like. Listen, I think we share similar sentiments on this next topic. We're gonna like beat around a little bit here. And that's the breaking part of the hobby for real quick for those who don't know, breaking is where you buy, whether you buy a random team a team, and you know, a breaker will open a case, a box, a series of boxes, and you get all the cards of that team.

It's a little more than that, but I'm giving you the sort of cliff notes version. Let me start off by saying, Mike, I've been doing this a long time. I grew up in the era when when you were kids and you bought your packs or you bought your box, like everyone had their packs and everyone had their box, and you open your own stuff. I remember my friends would say, new man, I'm done with my packs.

Let me open a couple of yards. And I slapped a hand away, like, no, man, you I don't. It's not my fault you open your packs too quick. I'm opening my pack.

If you would have told the younger version to me, hey, thirty years from now or whatever, you know, years from now, people are gonna pay other people to open their stuff on a on a live and then just send them the cards. I would have thought you were insane, like that's gonna be a thing. That's never gonna be a thing. I don't even want to you open my pack in front of me when I'm sitting next to you.

Sure, ZECH don't want you open it. Who knows how many miles away. Though, are like the purest form of card collect you know that in your hands on the packs themselves and opening them, opening them. I mean we all started out though, and uh, I don't know, it's just I think that what it's become has it's just out of control.

I think it's not a. Gateway to the hobby, it's a gateway to leave the hub. So for me, I'm all about the hobby and the cards. And then you know, people say, yeah, you should collect what you like and all that they are.

People are having fun with it, they're using it as entertainment. But you know what, I don't find entertainment in like burning hundred dollars bills. I really don't. You know what if I like to stack one hundred dollars bills, that's what I like to do.

That's entertainment. I'll watch a show for it. I don't need somebody opening baseball card packs and then yelling and screaming on the screen or. Dip or you know, they're not They don't even send you all the cards.

They throw half of them in the trash. Yeah, it's obscene what they're doing on the And then you got companies like what what not? I call them? Why not? Well, because they are a cesspool of people on there that are just going and and they're ripping people off left and right. I'm not about ripping, that's all. Yeah.

I draw the line there with her, So I have strong feelings on it. If you want to do it, you know, who am I to sit and. Do whatever the hell you want. I don't really care, but I would if my kids were doing breaking, I'd be slapping them upside the head and.

Making sure I take the credit card when I'll tell you that. Yeah, I've had people say, John, you know, because I set up at shows as a dealer. I've gone on you know, eBay, and I sell online, not live, but I list stuff and sell that way and as a deal you know. And every once in a while I get asked, you know, have you ever thought about breaking or having you know, running and breaking? And I gotta be honest with you, not really, it's never across on mine.

It's just, you know, I just it's not my thing, you know, full transparency. Have I ever bought into a break? Oh? Yeah I have, but it was it's probably the last time I ever did that was five or six years. I guess, if, if, if, if, if I have to say anything on the positive side, Mike about breaking, is it does afford some folks maybe an opportunity to get an expensive product right where that can't afford you know, a whole box another. Word, and you shouldn't buy it.

No, and I don't disagree with you. You shouldn't be buying any You should save your money, get it. I don't buy it. I don't, I don't.

I don't disagree with you. But let's take a product like Transcendent right there, one of my favorite. But you know what, you could buy a spot for I don't know, one hundred couple hundred bucks and potentially get that one on one auto that's in each of those metal suitcase that. Yeah.

Yeah, but you make a great point to You could get skumped. You could get you know, Jose Kendo. Uh, I'm making up a name. Not know what I mean, not that you can you will get stumped.

Yeah, they say that most of them. It's like playing the lottery, So you might win most of the time when you don't know the odds these breaks at least you know the odds of the California lottery, right or any lottery in your state, and you know they're basically they've called that the idiot tax for years. Lottery. Who plays the lottery? I mean, if you want to play ten dollars here and there, you know that money is gone and that's kind of what these guys are doing if you're not thinking that.

And these mystery packs are the other things that they're tied in. So you basically have two things that are driving the economy in the hobby. You have brakes and. You have mystery You have mystery packed buyers that are you know, loading the liquidity up for everybody making making it.

And look, this is the musical chair game that is not going to end well now, fanatics, they're pushing it to the moon and they don't because all. They care is fast money. They're not looking five years down the road. They've got some kind of a mystery pack coming out.

Now that's an NFT or a digital. A digital, don't get you could do a whole show. Well, this is what we're talking about, because we're talking history. Packs and breaks are listening to the hobby.

They are the boil on the ass of the hobby. And that's all. Yeah, Well, here here's the problem. Here's the problem.

How many times we see a breaker and listen, not every breaker is a bad, right, but how many times more good than yeah, no doubt, but how many times we see the bad one? Right? Take something off the screen and then miraculously we never see it again where we hear the stories like where they refuse to send someone their rightful cards and. Claim companies like whatnot these major platforms that are now supporting that crap and that you know when they have the guys at the top that aren't saying it now they're not a sponsors, are they? No? Okay, so then but what about the other guy? Like you have the arena clubs and the card basis and. No, I've had I've had arena club on sports cardination like reps from to talk about. They talk, they come on and they're always trying to sell something on your show.

So I'm not selling anything and knowledge from base to fifty fifty years of card actually, I guess it's probably been more than that. I mean, I'm sixty three years old now. You never know, looking at the blessing, you look you look younger than me. I'm right, I don't.

I don't know what you're gonna after we go off the air, but have to ask you for like a it's just like but it's a good gene. Pool, I guess. But uh yeah, I mean, I just don't see the fascination with it that people want to jump in and they want to fall a card they can't see on whatnot for twenty dollars when it's a dollar card and they want to tip the guy another twenty dollars because his wife has been kidnapped. Or something stupid.

You know what I mean that these are the kind of scams that are. If you couldn't script some of the stuff like Disney, like Hollywood, Hollywood say this is too crazy for that. Can't be the hobby. And do you think you're going to get more people into the hobby? Well, I mean maybe because people are pretty stupid.

Well I think you will. Here's the thing. You'll get people in, Mike, But will they stay for the long haul? I mean you know they won't. They don't care because they're in for a quick bok and then they're out.

We're not in it. We were in it for the enjoyment of the hobby. And like you always see say or say, I used to think you were a nutcase. You always the hobby and the.

People cards it is. But listen, turns out you're right. I do have to give it. Are you scared me for a minute? No, I know you're right.

I mean that's what Listen, The cards are the common bond we share, right, But the stories of how we acquire that card, or someone looked out for us and say, hey, man, I know you're looking for this card. So and so has it, right, Or when we go to the national and we get together and have dinner and sometimes we're not even talking about the hobby at that point. We're just goofing off and and enjoying a beverage and joking about who knows who knows what. Right.

It's that camaraderie, right. It's like when you hear an athlete that's retired and he's interviewed like his post career, and they ask of like do you miss the game? And a lot of times you hear him say, you know what, I missed my teammates. I don't miss the game. I can't play it anymore.

I'm fifty years old, but I miss being in the dugout. I miss being in the clubhouse, the locker room with my teammates. I think the hobby is like that too. We just did this all by ourselves and didn't share the stories or our passion, we wouldn't enjoy it as much.

I'm not saying we wouldn't still do it. I would, I still. Would enjoy it, Don't get me wrong, because I think we're all a little bit of a loaner to some degree. I mean a lot of us collectors are.

You know, we're anal to some degrees, like either we were fixated on centering, or there's you know, were semi hoarder, or there's something with us that drives us to collect. But then also we're all human beings and we like to connect, and uh it is a fascinating uh uh you know concept of like meeting people that do love what you're doing, and it does increase the enjoyment, There's no question about it, you know. Yeah. And I've seen people who who would tell you they're like introverts or they're pretty shy in the hobby.

Yeah, and the hobby brings out that other side of them right where maybe you know what I would people don't believe me when I tell them, Like as a as a younger kid, I was super shy. Like if you would have told the younger version of myself you'll be doing this all these years later. I would have thought you were nuts or on drugs, and and and here and here we are right, So yeah. I agree breaking, But what if I said this, and I've said this on on many of my shows, and I'm not gonna back off.

But whether you agree or disagree, I will say this, love breaking or hate breaking, it had it did save the wax part of the industry, like you know what I mean, and Toks, the Pennines and the other card manufacturers. There was a point where wax was was not selling on the levels we know today, collecting a little bit of dust, and the breaking industry saved it, which is why I believe it's embraced in the way that it is by your your paninies and fanatics. And that's what I mean you're saying, so you agree with that, You're saying they need smoking mirrors to sell their product then, and a lot of verbal bejs basically to people and products every week. I mean you mentioned something tonight.

I almost forgot about Transcendent. I've got games down here, and I like the chat to come up with some of these names too, like Obsidian, I don't know what that, Nebula, diamond icons, Mercer, triple thread, gilded Sapphire, definitive. These are just a few. If you type breakers you know, cosmic Bowman chrome, and then you've got.

So many parallels to one of these and this is all in one year. I mean, where does it the stupidity end to where they have to push everything for the moment and then now it's onto something else. And then you've got this debut patch selling for a million dollars. I mean, who in the hell in.

Their right mind is going to buy that Paul Skins patch for a million dollars? Dick bought it. Well, that reminds me, Dick, They're off my list. No more paddle ball, pick a ball shoes, They're nothing, nothing from Dick, no more bats. But I mean, and I'm not defending them.

Dick's Boarding Goods bought it. They're head I believe they're headquartered in Pittsburgh. That's their corporate headquarters. So they're putting it in their like flagship store.

What I want to. See, that's a good that's a good tax right off. Yeah, what I want to see is what kind of security that's going to be behind and like. How fast it drops, like like Wiley Coyote off that cliff.

Well, listen, I like Paul Skins, He's a picture, you know, the pictures. Yeah, I mean I like that. You know what I like more than it? Vintage? My bank I don't like. I mean a million dollars.

Come on, you must have obviously it's somebody who has billions and buys, you know, a million dollar cards, like we buy a thousand dollars, one hundred dollars, you know. Can you you know when I see a card sell for that, especially inside of the more modern side, Mike, I just think of all the vintage cards I could buy for that kind of dough if I was spending the next. I'll make a deal. By the time I'm going to be sixty eight years old, I'll be Orlando's age, right in five years.

If that card isn't worth one hundred thousand or less on camera on your show, I will do a cartwheel into my pool. And a bully flower. Well, listen, come come to Central New York. You can do that, and you can go into the hot tobs.

And three inches of water. I'll do it. You could go you could go into the hot tob What comment here? From three to half these people we keep talking about the kind of people ripping off on one that well, listen, like, like Mike said, early, right, I think, yeah, well I think there's more good people. Let's let's be really.

There is no like I want to put. I want to put a shout out to a guy who taught me all these terms that I'm going to go through. Uh he's his name is Arnie. He he's on a channel as thecard deal dot Com.

He does breaks, but he's also a collector. And this guy is the nicest guy and patient with me when I didn't know any of these things, like rip I knew what was but like, he's got jumbo. Box hangers, bangers, bong hits, case breaks, holy Grail pulls, jaw dropping, monster pulls, retail super box, Mega Mystery Blaster, fat packs, massive one on ones. All these things.

So he I want to give him a shout out because I talked to him in lieu of this and said, I want to let people know that there are good people out there, and I consider him one. He said he doesn't want to be called a breaker or anything like that. He says what he does is he runs a virtual card shop. And that's basically.

Yeah, it's a virtual card shop where you can. Buy supplies, you can buy singles, you get into some team Breaks. And I don't and Orlando knows Arnie is his name. Yeah, I don't want.

I don't want to shout out yeah like stink bomb or whatever. And back door, I don't. We don't need these backdoors. It's like it's it's really borderline.

Is it like a porn channel or a hobby? Well, I mean it is, because that's what they're talking about. And and then you don't get and then they don't get any you know, any uh, the merits for whatsoever. It's just business as usual people, because it's all about money. Yeah.

Only thing I definitely want to get rid of the the let's go when they hit something big. Wait wait until tonight because I'm debuting my Petty and the car Breakers new breaking mystery packs. Man, look at me, it's got a KABOOMI and it's look, you get what you're gonna as pack? You get? I forgot what I wrote? Oh, it's included. And then that's all the details.

That's your ads. Yeah, that's it's been scanned, hanger, hot pack banger. And what I want to know, what I want to know. What I want to know was that pat Cat scanned all.

My packs in my new company are going to be scammed. You're gonna see some breaks tonight and. For one hundred dollars. I'm telling you, some kid, some guy.

People are selling these on eBay. Right. They come up with these fancy packs. They send you a white envelope with four cards and they.

Haven't even did They're not even wrapped. I'm like, like, what the hell is this. This isn't a mystery pack. This is a mass mystery pounding.

It's like, you're just I'm giving you money. I will say this, I will say this. Let them do that. After seeing the design of that that rapper, how do you like? Canadian Fanatics needs to call you like that? I love that that shot when I come to basketball football, and most importantly.

I want I just want. I want to just I want to. That's a full shirt. That's a full shirt.

I got a big shirt now. But if you want to have like I don't think they make a half shirt, but I'd have to wear like a medium then it would become one. So I can wear an extra small and then be like that guy wear some glasses. Let's go, Yeah, let's go.

We gotta retire the Let's go. If I had, you know, if I had a nickel for every let's go or Hello Newman that I hear, I wouldn't have to work. Ever. All the players yell let's go.

That's all they yelled. They yell at I know. I think it's more of a sports thing, and then I think the hobby kind of stole it. So let let's like give it back to him and let them get good point.

Let whatever. All right, So let's uh, I'm gonna you want to open. You got a couple packs too. You gotta thirty.

I'm gonna go, yeah, go ahead, because I know you got a few more. This is a nineteen ninety Premiere edition football. Now. I remember getting the I.

Remember those, remember these things I was collecting that. I want to tell you the hits, because this is the hits we're gonna get. Jerry Rice, I'm not going to I don't know how to move by kid. Yeah, just do the best you can.

This is singer. You see that. I almost went everywhere. I don't know if we're gonna win an Emmy anyway, So do the best.

I'm not a hand model or any number seventy four, whoever that is, Paul grub I have to sweat them. Brian Blade's who are these guys? He's somebody good. Eric Williams, what a bum? Yeah, don't take the pack up, screw. Trust.

Look at this guy. He's the He's Mac Jones of his era, John four Kade, I need him one of one. Boy, This is Perry Camp. Keep in mind, this is what's gonna happen to all your ship that you're opening up today.

Kerry, No hall of famership. You haven't hit a Hall of fame Jones, of course, Eric Allen, he's a hall of fame. Is an angle. Oh look, you can't string a sentence together, but boy can he run? That? My friends, is what we call a hit.

Let's go Pharreel Edmunds. We got one hit and wait you see remember this? Do you see what my packs are loaded with? Don Mosebar? What another one? I'll get that one in my back pocket. Lt. I'm not gonna tell it today.

And I think I've told on the show. I met him at one International that was a hilarious was doing blow. I think he might have been because he wouldn't. I was like trying to be polite and like I talked him for like six seven minutes and then I'm like, all right, Eltie, I won't bug you.

And he grabbed me by my arm or pulled me back and said, oh man, let's talk. And all these guys because nobody wants to talk to him anyway, they know, So then he can tell a cool guy with the all right, let's see what you got that was already get that greater DLT. What do you guys think? Oh look, I think the corners you dropped it, so shoot, wait a little. That's a sharp corner.

That's I think I can get that out with a little Kurt. Yeah, you just. Gotta roll it. You gotta get the rolling kid.

Oh, I knew I shouldn't. I knew I shouldn't have dreamed the show. It's authentic up there. Now, all right, let's see what there you go? All right, I'm gonna try to.

I don't know, I haven't. I didn't test this out before, so I'm gonna try to. I can look at you. You're I'm gonna lower this.

I also not a hand model, so let's uh, let's see how this works. I'm gonna set it down there and get rid of. Get rid of the wrapper. Oh that's the other thing breakers do they have to show either like an empty box.

So there you go. All right, you got yours, there's your puzzy, you. Got your got Oh look at this right off the bat, right off the bat, Mike Schmidt, there you go, Evans, Tony Tony Armis. I'm trying to read it like.

Bob Boos bomb boom, Aaron's deadman. Chuck carry no relation to Mariah Chuck. God Crook. This was actually I still play softball, Mike.

This is actually one of my nicknames. They call me crook. I thought you're gonna say play. With no, no, no, They just say I look like him when I play softball.

Although he's a lefty, I don't bat left in the right handed that day, Dave Steve, is that trying to look with another? Philly Glenn Wilson, Andy Messersmith, Tusac, Remember Lenn Methusac. He was a Dodger. Who's this guy? Rafael Belly? Are I remember him as a brave? Yeah? He was a bum. Water the next boat.

Wayne Crinchickie, the legend, the legendary. He was good, Wayne Boy. There we go, Kirby Dia m King. That's a good one.

That's an insert hit Andre Dawson the Hawk. That's a great package, didn't Yeah. I've opened Worse eighty seven daughters Randy Meyer. Yeah, and close it out.

You gotta end on a sour note, Joey Meyer. But you got two big hits. I'd say you won that battle, even though I had Lawrence Taylor. But unfortunately my Mike Taylor got a little problem.

All right, So what are we next? We do we want? Went over one more? Then? Well I got two more. Go with the legends. Go with the legends. That was my secret pack.

There's lots of hits in that. This is serious series too. We're looking for We're looking for Joe ju lace Joe, and I'll tell you what that pack came a little too. We're looking for a shoelace Joe or a Babe root Ty Cobbs in this set.

It's a good point right here. You have a die cut. You got a die cut. I thank you very much.

I'm not before there was in the back, so I don't want to Tony and Dajo LaRussa is a drinker like me. He's still Goltzman. But that looks pretty good. Then Jewish he made he made my when me and Danny did a.

Ten tap Jewish ballplayers. Ken Holtzman. They they did not realize he was Jewish. But I mean, it's nice, nice.

To know he is. We can make an argument, Mike, not to steal your pact under here. The second best Jewish Jewish pitcher in baseball history, really the first one. Yeah, well that's why he's in the legends.

Yeah, and in seventy three. He just passed away. A couple of months ago. He was twenty one and three with a two nine seven.

Yeah, that's a pitcher. He's better than Paul Skeeny's. Will ever keep that. Punk Bauer? He was a drinker.

He used to go out with. I think that whole Yankee team. I think if you played out of the Yankees during that that. Oh here's a big hit.

Lee Thornton Billy Bob Thornton, they called him his later years. I reckon, I don't got ready. That's guy I could throw a knuckleball. Yeah, he's an underrated guy.

He's an underrated pitcher for forty years. He's got three hundred wins. Earl Avril, that's the guy I'm gonna get. No Baby, Ruth, Smokey Bird, We're down to the last two here, Haines.

Now I'm starting to get it irritated. Look at that Whitey Ford finally. Something on the boards. Yeah he drank too, but he could pitch.

He knew when to stop. You knew when to stop drinking. Just definitely out of time and money this, I'll tell you what I wish. I wouldn't have spent eighty five dollars.

I was looking for the for the chase hit and I didn't get it, and I threw my pack away, all right. So well, in fairness, you know, we're opening different packs, so it's hard to it's hard to compare apples to the too our let me So you never bought it to a break then, and I would never. I would never give them the pleasure of giving them fifty cents for a break, not a nickel. I kind of.

Stand like, I'd much rather piss it away on something stupid than find a break to gamble. See, I like the I like to gamble on stuff. I feel like I have a fighting chance, so I like drop a few bucks on sports. I can understand that.

I mean, I don't bet sports anymore, at least. At least there's a fighting chance if you follow whatever sport. I used to play rotisserie baseball high stakes for many years. Yeah, I mean since the nineteen eighties when we were you know, counting the stands by stats by hand or having them faxed every week.

So I found myself, you know, scouting teams. I would go spring training games, I would look for all the rookies, and I literally would draft that way. Then I played in the f NFBC. For a while.

I was some of those guys, and I was always competitive. But then I'll tell you what, when your pitcher gets rocked in the first inning and you start getting mad, and it's not even a money thing, really, it's just it's time to stop. So that fantasy football. Similarly, I don't play a lot.

I'll play in a friendly league, but even friendly leagues, I was. Gonna say, you can play in the money leagues with no big leg if you do. Yeah, I mean I still, but I would be the same way on Sunday, you know, watching the red zone and getting mad and trying to going like I can't believe there's ten touchdowns and my guy's got nothing. All right, I'm a stealer.

I'm a Steeler fan. So I'm already gonna get mad at football, so I'm also just being a fantasy league too. Yeah as well they stay anyway. Yeah, I don't know what's going on there.

They don't even have a real quarterback. Yeah somewhat, got a good team, but they just can't. Put it together. I guess I don't know.

All right, what's your last pack going? Are you ready? You want to save it? Let's save it. Let's talk a little more, and we'll save it here. For when I pull out. When you get my pack, I get you're gonna get a.

Lot of I'm looking forward to that. I almost gonna watch you to open it. The rapper looks so nice. I was like, I don't know, worry, there's more where that camp from.

I'll be selling these on my breaking who knows what to be in there, mystery grab. You're gonna need someone behind the scenes to ship all these orders out. I'm gonna have a hot hand model. She's gonna to be put into the Penny Sleever, the Penny Savers whatever they call him, because I.

Don't use those things. But all right, so yeah, I mean I have these two packs. I'll open another if you if you want to hold your yeah, open, open, open one more. I got this mind has lots, always have long.

Michael Jordan's is there. I don't think so. I think it's because I think he was in the first one. But you know who it does have in it? Minute Bull and Bull and some people say he is the modern day Wembley.

And you knew it took us thirty six minutes before his name came up. You love that. There's no don't forget bow bo. I don't know where he is now.

But model. My wife heard that. She must be watching, she said, she says, no, no hot hand models. All right, so let's just see what we got here.

Let's see Caitlin Clark, that Lyles. You know, if you if you squint, that did. Look a little bit. It looks like a beautiful could remember him.

I don't, no, I actually don't. I got problems with upside downs. Jerry want to jump? You got jump ball? There's a jump all right, I've got to keep it a board. Whoopsie.

I don't want people to you get. To Jordan here, be careful. Man Haling knows you get into Jordan's. Michael Adams, God, where these guys bums? You like to hear him something good, Orlando, she was ja rule before job.

Whatever is this John More Harvey Grant twin brother of course Antonio Anthony? Is this Tony Webb? Is it fun? No? I don't think so. It's Anthony Webb before Greg Grant, remember him. I do you do? I'm embarrassed to say I do, but yeah, I keep the dream. Let's look at this.

That's a case hit. That is a changing I'm gonna get. There's a kid in college. There's a kid that could have went to college right there.

Here's probably one of the biggest bums that ever played. Whenever I said now, this is after he jumped, when he was sucked, the Lakers. Owned him, drafted ahead of Jordan by the way. For yeah, Adrian cartwheel And that's what I'm gonna do.

Do a new cartwheel for you into the pool after the guy Jeff Turner, another bump here him something good, Casey Joan. Look at the colors they flicker. It's almost like a rainbow. That was a rainbow.

It's special. There you go, and here's the here's a guy that we're gonna tell that I used to love the best big man of a better Wemby before this time. Look at him with a hot shot. But Benjamin, Benjamin, he was a high picking for your center position.

Back into fantasy basketball. Here's a duel car. Be worth it time, Greg Anderson with James Worthy in the background. That's a Hall of famer.

All right, So that's all I got. I really kind of got skunked. I think I don't think I got too many. They didn't get you didn't get the Menendez brothers, and then he and I didn't get minute Bobo who I wanted.

All right, so I got nothing. And now all we're down to your package and we. Know you'll get something, and we got the mister. Are you ready? I'm ready? All right, here we go.

Let me move the camera again. Oh yeah, this is where the slider hand happened. Many he is eighty nine upper deck, I know for people who will be listening. Great, the Hakeem looks like a ten that movie.

That's funny. What we got's gonna have an efty stick together. These are just started out backwards. That looks like Nolan Ryan, you pull Roger who.

No, refri Al Ramirez. Oh looks like these are nice. These are upper decks. Let's get the day.

Listen, I don't. If I don't get the Griffy, just give me. The Dale Murphy reverse. I'll take it.

Jackie Udiiras, Yep, don't remember him. There you go, Andres Coloraga. He was good, the big Gatto. Yeah, he was.

Good, upside downs. A fifty lifetime hitter, though it's better than most today. Here's the funny thing. If there wasn't Griffy in here, everyone else will see it before before me.

Rick Russell remember him, will be the. Guy always let's go. The guy always looked like he was fifty years old. Even every when he was young.

We used to call him. He was good. He get the job done. There we go, h Angel Salasar.

There's one not as good as that. Eighty seven daughters. Now you're Scott, you're getting skunked. Yeah, don slot forget the round the round sticker boom.

I can't even tell what team it is. Mariners one. I'm Gettinger's just not the right Mariner got something? You got something there? Another sticker that's sticking to the car. Baltimore Orioles.

Oh, that's that's one of your guys like that. Orioles. Scott Fletcher, Little Scott Fletcher. We need to pull some kind of a gunner Henderson, Mike Bodeker, Mike Bock.

Yeah, that's so far, this's just shaping out to be one of the worst eight that that's saying something because I've opened quite a bit of Tommy Hurr, Yike's men, Larry McWilliams. They should have made the back to front. We'll get the back on this card. It was beautiful.

If that was picture from the nineties, there it looked like Freddie Mercury, Rick Roadin, he was a good he was a solid Major leaguer with the Dodgers. Apparently this is the Rick Pitchers pack, Rick Roaden, Rick Russell, Boy, Jeff Counk, you got yeah, this is I got counked, not skunkedunkled, Larry Anderson, he was traded for somebody good. Jeff Bagwell. And here's the Mariners.

Uh car, who's the who I think it's I don't know. Julio Rodriguez, j rod He probably had a nickname of some kind. He needed a nickname back then. So, man, that is a band that that tugue.

That's a because this back is probably what these things probably go five seven bucks to even in Today's That was at least. That was at least fun though. I mean you pet and for seven dollars. Now you could have bought into a break and got up Paul Skeeny's.

One of one. But you're never gonna find in like this. So let's just get right to it, shall we. Let's tell us all right, this is the guaranteed cat scan.

This is what you call a skin logan. That was That was hot. That was one of the worst eighty nine upper deck backs. Hot I've ever opened.

Here we go, hot patch. I almost feel bad because the wrapping on this is so good. They're falling out the bottom. We don't usually.

It's my first, my first break of my first pack. And look what I get on there? TJ is online outfield. Yeah, look at that. There's a winner that's right there.

Okay, here we go, break, I'm breaking it open. There we go. It's going to be an order here. So oh, look at this some shiny Kerry Bradshaw epic.

It's an epic six of eighteen panini. Does anybody know what this? Maybody tell me? I saw it? Thank you. Look at this another shiny Hazul for rock for one hundred dollars. Don't be afraid because there's more coming.

Oh look at it, sh it looks third. Look at that anybody else's pack but Mike Petty. And that's just rising stars the pack up. So people don't think I'm stealing.

But baby Bruce's not going anywhere. This is some. Guy Jalen wrong. Everything is wrong with it.

He's a I don't know what it's a score. That was a I had a I had some extras. Jim Neighbors rookie card. No way, unlet's say that's that's a good card.

Elak Neighbors. He looks like the real. Look at this Kate and Clark Hockeye's card. Let's go following up by.

Come buy me what signed one of one? Look at the back, it's all shimmer. Look at this what auction house? What auction house is that going to? I don't know, probably golden and I've been wanting this one for a long time. This is a m one O one Babe, Ruth rookie card. Look at the gloss on, Look at the corner forty news.

It's almost like it was made yesterday. I mean it looks beautiful. This will come in your packs. Oh, look at this tay cab.

It's a ty cob. It's not it's a it's a magpipe Wagner. Honey, I get my. Yeah, Hash has one of these on sale for seventy grand.

It's yours for one hundred if you buy my mystery. And then we got this little fill in a post. Nolan runs. Listen, I remember the post, the posts.

Remember these they came out like it wasn't this in some kind of a. Three three and the three in a pack and a little cellar. You are gonna believe We've already got inside of the cereal. You're not gonna believe this? You ready? You know who? You guys can't stop talking about him on hobby Hotline? Is it Greg Jefferies? No, on Hobby Hotline every morning it's Saturday morning.

Before it's eight oh five in the morning. You already mentioned his name and there it is. Oh no, that's not Tycoon. If this is the guy I was telling you about the web Victor one, tell me what the physical cracked ice sparkle.

One? Who? So this is what you're gonna get at Mike Penny's breaker breaking out? You know what? I feel like I'm watching the old down West late night. I'll tell you. Let me tell you something. When you go into a bar and you.

Sit down next to a beautiful woman, she's gonna say, boy, I want to go home with you because you got a one of one. Wendy. He would always knock the display over a drop. I'll tell you what.

Mookie sent me a great video of Don West uh from I think it was the early nineties, him and Ken Golden and these guys were just pumping and dumping nothing but garbage. And that's pretty much what you've got. I mean, there was no Unfortunately, Fintajid ball cards points out, there was no Dick Pole and Okay, I. Know, I know, Don Mossy Kaboomy, but that's what we really needed.

But that meets something that beats. Someone else is gonna hit those. Yeah, if you pay one hundred dollars for a pack like that, you're gonna get your money's worth out of. Mike Petty and the card Breakers all those were scanned and pre arranged just for the.

Effect called boomies. I just hope the Heartbreakers don't try to sue you. Tom Petty's Heartbreaker. He probably would.

I mean, because you know I don't know what they're doing now rest in peace. Uh, mister not doing anything really, they're just uh Mike Campbell is touring with his band. And that's about it. The other guys playing around with them.

Well, the rest of them are available if you want to make them cardbok they are. Yeah, so they could say I was an original heartbreaker, now I'm a card breaker. Now I'm a cardbreaker. I should have I should hire them to do breaks.

They got a little extra timee So right, well, no, lessen, yeah, no one. Nothing you're right home about really, probably the Mike Schmidt that was the best. Lawrence Taylor with a cut corner. Yeah, that's right, die cuts before they were die cuts.

Yeah, don't sleep but don't sleep on the Tony Demarzio before they were stars. Card Yeah, remember tho I was in the seventies. They did like they took a picture of a young major league player and they said before they. Were like, that was Tony.

They actually didn't one guy actually make it to the major leaguers or is that just a guy in the World Series. No. No, they used to do it with like the players in the big leagues and they did them what said it was that I think it was. It might have been seventy three, seventy four.

It was always funny to see him see him as kids, but they ton so. But that goes to show you're right. Listen, you said it right. Opening packs, regardless of almost whatever pack it was right, is an adrenaline rush to it, and it takes us back.

It takes us back. To our younger you know, I open eighty seven dollars in nineteen eighty seven. Open if you want to go to a show or whatever, and you want to go buy a box of something that you like or whatever. And the problem is to see the breaking.

My point is is it's it's also made it very hard, uh to buy boxes. It's increased the prices to the pole. That's true. I used that things the prices were dying and as we're dying out, so now they have to they almost like have to go to the middleman.

And the middleman isn't a wholesaler anymore. They're a breaker. And then you've got the you know, just the entertainment factor involved, and they've got to make money they're doing work or whatever. But then I don't know.

I just think it's a bad entry into the hobby. It's a bad look for the hobby. But Fanatics doesn't care because they're just a I don't know. I have no love for large companies like that all in all, and I don't particularly will never support them.

I won't go onto their option site and buy anything or but yeah, we were talking at one of my friends today about that their site, and he said, yeah, he's not going on there and buying anything either, because to to bid on their site, they want to bet. They want a bank statement from you to bid on their premiere auction. Prove to prove that you you know, pay for you. Yeah, and then I think about it, even Golden to get me like a lousy ninety thousand dollars limit or whatever it was, asked me for a you know bank uh, like a income statement, which I run my own business.

He's not getting my benk state. But that's little. I sent them my driver's license and a deed to my house and for why should you have to do that? Yeah, I get it, and I don't get like, I don't like that personal. You know, I'll give you my phone number, like that's the most of my social media.

You got my run a credit check on, I guess, or you got my credit card. You know, I'm not going to give you a like a I'm trying to take back in my store day. He's like I got online with like direct with flear and tops back then score up or deck. I'm trying to think.

I don't think even then. I mean this is in the mid ninety early mid till mid nineties, and I don't remember giving them bank statements. They wanted to see photos of the store and showcases. They wanted to see like that there was signage out like in the front the designated store.

And that was a little bit more of a friendliness time too to do business. You could do it on a handshake and like they'll they'll give you a small limit to start out, and then you pay them on time and they'll you know, continue and you build your credit that way. You know, it's not like like it is today. But I think the card shops are doing pretty well all in all too.

I mean I actually was at PSA a couple of weeks ago. It dropped because you know, one thing that they can do is they can reholder your cards and you never lose on the grades. So that's that's what I kind of started doing that. I gave him like fifty yards to rehold or kind of.

Because the other thing is is they were paid to beholdered at one time. Then they just look like crap. Over time they're not being you know, in the heat or the cold. But you've bought them so many years ago and they were you know, they're twenty years old and the labels look terrible.

So by just freshening the map, but not a little bit to kind of I don't know, I think it's better than me. If they don't, they don't do it too much anymore. Sometimes they run specials with those so they don't. Call, well they're twelve ninety nine for two thousand dollars or less per card.

That's that's not bad. But when you go to a show and take it, they want like, you know, the higher limit. It's like seventy nine dollars a card, which you have to be careful with that. But yeah, I don't know, I mean, and then we have the grading.

You know, that's a whole other topic. But well we can't talk about that in some five or ten minutes, but it is what it is. You know, we need them, we need them to succeed. And for the better or worse, you know, you just have to play their game.

And yeah, you do have to buy the card, and that's all there is to it. Little piece of mind there, you know, and buying it. Yeah, I've said this on my show Mike when when grading first hit the scene, I wasn't I was not integrading, like I was anti grading. But I've done obviously over the years, and.

It's better than any alternative because at least you have the starting point. The stupid thing isn't like nowadays and probably for the last three or four years, like I will not buy a card unlet's create it. And that's kind of sad. But I mean, when you're spending X amount of dollars on something, it's not like digging through.

The dollar box anymore. And I have my raw. Collection, which I love, you know, I probably have half my collection is raw and a couple of boxes and I sift through through those and I don't care if they're trimmed and they're in X let's say, VG t X t X ment maybe they don't need to be graded, you know, they're they're not worth much and I just don't care to spend the money on it, or like I don't need all that plastic. The other thing is, like what are they doing with all this plastic PSA at all these companies.

They say they recycle them, but I got to tell you, I recycle more plastic than PSA ever could recycle. I'm actually a very well known. Recycler out in southern California for the personal CARNDI. It all goes to really one place, so I don't know if they're sending it there or not, but I'm told that that plastic is not even recyclable because it's coming from China.

So it's last. It's last. That's interesting. It's last use plastic, and the only way to recycle it is to incinerate at a like a cogantta energy like they call it, like a waste energy.

And I doubt very seriously where it. Probably is ending up in the landfill because like so, if it goes to the recycler and they can recycle some of it, they will like they'll recycle ten percent maybe or whatever, and then. They will landfill the rest of it the recycler. If it's going to the one place in Baldore Park, I think it might because it's.

Close to Santa Ana, but who knows. I was in when you walk I kind of wanted to go in there and look around the back, and you know, when you walk in to hand off your cards or you do go around the back. So I didn't see any bins or anything. Next set up outside, Like I would figure maybe they would have locking tops, roll offs or something like that for their because they wouldn't want anybody getting in the into that or that.

Like, what do they do with all those cracked slabs? It's why I got an idea they should they should melt it down. Yeah, take bad people to hobby and like like the carbon ight what they did with hands on Solo and Star Wars. They should like carbonite freeze bad folks. Well, it wouldn't be nice to think that they could, you know, get they could cut it, or they could create pellets out of it to make more, you know, or something like that.

Something they can make some kind of energy or something. The bottom line is is that the process of recycling plastic is it's the one of the biggest lies out there that it's very difficult. We used to send it all to China, China, Yeah, but now you know, they stopped taking it because they were. Just throwing it.

I got a feeling some of it some of it winds up in the bottom of the ocean. Yeah, or Thailand. Now, they're not illegal dunything like. That out here and there, because they'll go to jail for that.

But I just said that they're they're most likely landfill in it all. And if you can imagine that stuff all ending up that and all these shiny cards they all have heavy metals, precious metal gymy know, you walk around the National every garbage can. You walk around the National all the people throwing out their base cards, and it hurts my heart. What are the kids? I mean, you know, I would get my kids to just fish all that stuff out, and.

Yeah, I like to see and I think they did it. I think they did it. At one time. They put like put a box in it that says, hey, put unwanted cards here and give them the people who will wind them.

And there are people who will wire. Yeah, and who knows those players, don't they probably a lot of them will end up doing better than these other prospects. That's true. And a rookie card is a rookie card.

I'm still like, base cards don't bother me. That's the other thing going real quick before we you know, when you watch a break, right and they're just going through all the base cards, so fake game and see them and they're just looking for that that one card right parallel. They that always like that. I don't even watch breaks at this point, you know, but that's like man like, I don't expect them to take two minutes.

But that's it. It's all about how much time we spend so we can get to the next product and make some more money. Yeah, that is exactly it, because they if they're not opening, they're not breaking, they're not making money. Yeah, I'm sure there's even some kind of algorithm, like they probably tell their staff we got to break four products in the hour otherwise make less money or.

It's not got a grade fifteen cards. Yeah. Everything, there's always a quota. There's always a quota, whether we know what it is or we don't know what it is.

There you go, there's nothing else. Yeah, I got crowned. I got crowned PEPSI tonight. Oh boy, good for you.

You're off to a good start. Well listen, first off, Mike, thanks for being the first new guest on the on the. Thanks for having me, I hope. Well, yeah, we're gonna try to do these every other week, very similar to to mention it.

So the next one that takes either the third or fourth, I'll announce the guests when we get a little bit closer. I've got a list of people that I want to get on. I'm more professional. I don't know about that.

I wouldn't go that far. Let's now, I want everybody to watch me on the Southern Collector Channel fourteen. I do a show of the Southern Collector. So that's it's called The Odd Couple, and we just started our first show.

You'll get a little bit of the petty minute. You'll get it's funny because he's a great guy and uh yeah, you know, and and I'm pretty much not but he's he kind of keeps me straight and we we play off each other. But he's just a great man. He's got a great channel and a great collection.

Kind of like just hit it off. So anyway, watch that. And then other than that, Mookie Chilsen's channel, you got to check him out, Midlife Cards, Splendid Sports. All these guys returned to collecting.

There's a lot. There's so much, and I talked with even talking with you before we went live. I need to start doing more content that's separate from the audio stuff I already do, and it's on my list. Well, you have a time slot.

Nobody wants to mess with your Friday night. Now you have a six o'clock nine Eastern show, and uh, you have hobby hotline? Are you doing? Logan is hosting tomorrow along with Man. I should know. Uh, Logan, help me out.

It's uh Victor Man, let me look. Victor Victor, his lately is a one since he got his not. Only logan Victor in Orlando, the slogan Victor in Orlando can also do like. A side job, a painting channel and a remodeling.

So he's really good at that because he's been remodeling. For six months. But his channel has been really good lately since he's like giving up on all the rookie because. People are broader.

I can't listen, I can't put it barely nail it no, I can definitely. I can drive a hammer right through the wall, no problem. Yeah, So tomorrow Shameless Plug eleven a m Eastern a AM Pacific Logan Victor in Orlando, get on there. Yeah.

When you talk about good guys in the hobby, right, yeah, three three of those come right to. I have thirty five minutes plus or minus. I have the under and how how long it takes to mention VM. I got a feeling.

I kind of know the topics. I don't think you're gonna hear a lot of web talks. You a chat, you a chat. I'm trying to get it going's done with that.

It's gonna take you a chat Mike to get it going. But other than I don't over under. Before he had the blood clot with the with the trombone, itists. Before he had that, it was five minutes and you guys were on the unders every time.

I think you're gonna be If you're looking for Wemby, talk to mar it might be disappointed. If you like Paul, if you like Paul Skis and the million dollar patch card, it might be it might be the show for you. I got my fat little fingers ready for the chat. All right, guys, I'll talk talk.

Hey, everybody, thank you for for being in the chat room. If you're listening to audio, this will come out on Monday on Sports Carnation. On the audio side, we appreciate you taking your time out even there and listen. I get it.

You don't want to see my ugly mom. I don't know. I get that, and. You know, get to the Apple podcast.

They don't have to look at you. That's great. Yeah, I would do that if I was you two, so I'm not gonna be mad at you. Again.

Mike will do it again. We'll have to do a sports Car Nation. That's a different type of show. So all right, I have a good night, you have a good weekend everybody.

We'll see the best.
